Hello!
My name is Elena Kolomeets. I have two children: Vladimir (15) and Yulia (8).
I am a single mother. I also have a disabled mother. She cannot walk on her
own and can hardly see, so I have to take care of her all the time. We all
live together in a one-room apartment.
I used to work as a pastry cook, but after my daughter was born I had to
quit working. I found a job close to home... as a janitor. But this way I
did not have to leave Yulia, Vladimir and my mother for a long time. My son
is now in the 9th grade, and my daughter in the 3rd, although she has not been
going to school since April 20.
In 2008 Yulia broke her ankle. Well, it was just a broken bone, and then it
healed and my daughter could walk again. Who could have thought that a broken
ankle would have such consequences!
First Yulia began to have pains in her leg, then there appeared a lump. Yulia
had a number of examinations, after which she was sent to the N.N. Petrov
Oncology Institute. Upon performing a biopsy the doctors diagnosed her with a
synovial soft tissue sarcoma of the right ankle.
Since May 12 we have been staying at the children's unit of the Oncology
Institute. On June 1 a surgery was performed, and on June 15 the first
chemotherapy course was administered. Yulia had lots of problems with
chemotherapy. A lymphoid cyst appeared at the surgery scar. The doctors say
it should disappear with time. They also say that Yulia's disease can be cured,
but such tumors are not very susceptible to chemotherapy.
We hope that everything is going to be fine. But such treatment is very hard for
us to afford. In spite of the fact that it is subsidized by the government,
we still have to buy some drugs ourselves (e.g. antiemetic and antiallergic
drugs).
I have been without a job for two months now, and my mother's pension allowance
is only enough to pay for utilities. At present we don't even have enough money
for food. And I still have to get my son everything he needs for school. I believe
that there are lots of good people out there and someone will hear us.
We will be grateful for any help we can get.

Update as of August 2, 2010.
Yulia completed the second cycle of chemotherapy. She was discharged home in
satisfactory condition. She is feeling better: she is getting her appetite
back, smiling, and playing. In other words, she is now feeling sad, and it
is very important for me! We wait for her blood counts to rise so she could
start the third cycle of chemotherapy.
Yulia loves to draw, make clay figures, and work on puzzles. In the evenings
we go outside, and she really enjoys it.
Yulia's mom
Update as of February 3, 2011.
After the 3rd chemotherapy cycle, Yulia was referred for radiation therapy.
She had 25 sessions in September and October. Control tests in November
(biopsy) were good, but a cyst is still present. Complete examination in January
(ultrasound, x-ray and abdominal MRI) also show a cyst, but its sizes are unchanged.
The doctors decided to monitor it to see whether a surgery is needed.
Yulia feels rather well, but her cardiac problems developed after chemotherapy are
still unresolved. During consultation at Children's hospital No.1, she was
recommended Elcar, but she had an allergy to it.
Yulia is studying at home with much interest. She now has a cold. The next
examination at Oncology Research Institute is scheduled for March.
Yulia's mom
Update as of March 13, 2011.
Yulia will be hospitalized for examination at Oncology Research Institute. She feels well.
Update as of September 9, 2011.
Based on monthly tests, Yulia is in sustained remission. In August she underwent
rehabilitation in Olgino. She was diagnosed with heart problems, and the
doctors are now monitoring her condition (every two weeks she goes for control ECG).
From time to time she gets high blood pressure.
Update as of December 18, 2011.
The latest examination took place in October. The basic disease is ok,
but neurological problems are still there, and from time to time Yulia
has tachycardia. Yulia mostly feels feels fine.
