Center of Hematology in Medical University of Saint Petersburg coordinates efforts
to raise the funds to pay for unrelated bone marrow transplantation
to Violetta Moteva, suffering of myelodysplastic syndrome.
My daughter, Violetta Moteva, was born on December 6, 1994. Until she was 5, my daughter
did not have any health problems. After she turned 5, she had a rare disease, felinosis
(cat scratch disease). Then Violetta started getting colds often, and her hematosis was
affected. In March of this year, Violetta had pneumonia for the third time. We were sent
for examination at the hospital, but this time, unfortunately, we had to go to the Oncology
& Hematology unit of the hospital. The examination lasted a month and included several tests,
sternal biopsies and trepanobiopsy.
As a result, my daughter was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome and refractory
cytopenia. There is a high probability of conversion of this disease to acute leukemia.
A bone marrow transplant is recommended for this disease. Violetta's parents did not match
as donors for her. It means that a search for donor at the international registry has
to be initiated. The search costs 15,000 euro, and the delivery of transplant to St.
Petersburg costs another 2,000 euro.
This operation has to be performed so that Violetta can live and enjoy her life. I would like
to ask everybody who has kind heart and an opportunity to help: please help my daughter!

Update as of July 18, 2005.
My daughter Violetta does not feel very well. In the last three months, she could
not go without Etamsilat, the medicine that prevents the loss of blood. She has
low thrombocytes, particles that are responsible for blood clotting.
They are at 20 – 30 – 40. I am forced to stay at my daughter's side 24 hours a day.
It is summer now, and it's very hot. My daughter has to stay inside all day,
and only in the evening we can go for a walk. Our doctor keeps asking me why
we delay the operation. Violetta's illness, myelodysplastic syndrome, can at
any moment transform itself into acute leukemia, the disease that is very
hard to treat and is very dangerous.
Unfortunately, we do not have the money to pay for the donor search,
and all our efforts to find the sponsors, either governmental or
private, were fruitless so far. We are grateful to DKMS registry
that agreed to perform the search on the reduced cost basis; however, we
do not have 10,000 euro, or even 5,000 euro.
Please help us. My daughter is a very fun, cheerful girl and she appreciates
every minute of her life.
Please help us collect the money to search for the donor.
Thank you very much.

Update as of July 27, 2005.
I would like to thank the people who provided us with help for their kindness and compassion, and also those people
who are helping us to collect the money. These people are father Bogdan (Nikolsky cathedral), Svetlana Kravchenya
and Irina (Baltijskij plant), and Natasha Kozlova (childcare no. 5).
The last donations we received were from Irina for 10,000 rubles and Svetlana for 100 rubles. We also received
bank transfers for 2,000 rubles and 1,000 rubles.
Violetta is not well. The lymph node in her left groin area is enflamed. Based on our doctor’s recommendation,
we are using gentamicin ointment. If it does not help, Violetta will have to take antibiotics.
We are still in need of funds to start the search for the bone marrow donor. Please help us!

she went to school. The rest of the school year she will be studying at home.

We are very grateful for the donations and your support! Thank you very much!

Update as of September 15, 2005.
Violetta and her mom are staying at the rehabilitation sanatorium in Solnechny. The search for the donor was paid for in full.
Update as of October 11, 2005.
The donor for Violetta has been located. Violetta is scheduled
to receive bone marrow transplant on November 2005.
Update as of November 8, 2005.
Violetta is scheduled to receive bone marrow transplant on November 29, 2005.
Update as of December 7, 2005.
Violetta received her transplant on schedule. The operation took a toll on her, but she feels much better now. We
are concerned about her heightened transaminase levels (she was prescribed Heptral, which was paid for by her parents).
We also need to buy her special food for parenteral infusion (the cost is 4,000 rubles for 10 days and it has to be purchased
by parents) and thrombocyte systems (the cost is 8,500 rubles apiece, and, as of today, the parents paid for two of them,
and the hospital provided another one).
Update as of January 5, 2006.
Violetta was discharged from the BMT department of State Medical University and
transferred to the Children's hospital No.1. Based on her condition, she could
have been discharged home, but her living conditions (communal apartment) do
not allow that. After receiving the transplant, Violetta's immune system will
be inhibited for a long time; therefore, sharing the apartment with other
people is very dangerous for her.
For that reason, we are looking for a separate apartment. We will be very grateful
for any offers.
Update as of February 13, 2006.
Violetta will need to take costly drugs, Cyclosporine and Diflucan, for at least six months. We are hoping for your support.
Update as of March 21, 2006.
Violetta is being discharged from the hospital. Her mom is planning on taking her to the sanatorium.
Update as of March 28, 2006.
Violetta got herpes-like rashes that quickly spread all over her body. She needs to take Zovirax on a long-term basis
(the cost of treatment is 5,400 rubles a month). In the beginning, it should be injected intravenously.
Violetta's mom would prefer to not hospitalize her at the Children's hospital No.1. She is looking for a doctor or nurse
who work or live near Vassilievsky island and could administer the medicine at home (for a fee). We will be very grateful for help.
Update as of April 3, 2006.
"AiF – Kind Heart" charitable fund donated 248 capsules of Diflucan (150 mg each) to
Violetta, which will cover full course of treatment.
In addition, Victor donated 12,000 rubles to buy Zovirax, while Anya sent 450 rubles for Violetta's treatment.
Thank you very much for your help!
Update as of March 13, 2008
It has been 2 years and 3 months since bone marrow transplantation. Fortunately, all is well
with us. Every year, Violetta goes for complete testing. She is home schooled, reads a lot and
enjoys beading.
She is still recovering from the transplantation. It is very difficult for us to live in a
communal apartment, especially in summer. I would like to take Violetta for rehabilitation
course to the Cardiology Center, but we have to pay full price for it.
If someone could help us with that, we will be very grateful. I would like to thank everyone
for all the help we received. Thank you very much! This is a new photo of Violetta.

Update as of June 30, 2009
In November 2005, my daughter Violetta underwent bone marrow transplantation
at Gorbacheva clinic.
We are very grateful to the doctors of the Institute and Children's
hospital No.1 who quickly prepared Violetta for the operation.
Thank you very much!
Violetta is doing well now. She finished seventh grade of school #12 in
St. Petersburg. She is a very patient and hard-working girl. While she
was ill, my daughter could not study or see her friends for two years,
because she was taking very serious medications that lowered her immunity.
From June 1 to June 30, Violetta was at the Solnyshko sanatorium for disabled
children. She will spend July and August in the city. I would like to find
tutors for her for English, Russian and math so that she does better at
school. I will be grateful to everyone who can help us. I cannot afford it
because I am a single mother.
We have one more issue. The orthodontist recommended Violetta to get braces,
so that she could have a beautiful smile. Unfortunately, it is very expensive
and I cannot pay for it. I am sorry for writing to you about this. I am
enormously grateful to everyone who has helped and continues to help others.
With you in it, the world is becoming brighter and kinder.

Update as of March 16, 2010
Hello! I have not written news in a while. I am bringing up
Violetta by myself and have to work a lot.
Yesterday we had upsetting news: I was laid off due crisis and
not enough work. I was working as a florist and enjoyed my job.
But now we have no income and I have to ask for help.
Violetta needs to go for testing. She has issues with allergy, so
she needs to see a specialist and be tested. This is very expensive
for me, especially now - the cost is 9,800 rubles. We will be
very grateful for help!
I will be enormously grateful if someone could help me find a new job!

Update as of November 8, 2011.
Dear AdVita fund, we are very grateful to all the people who have helped
us in the difficult year 2005. We remember everyone who supported us
and are very thankful.
We really appreciate support of the people who have helped us survive then.
In addition, 18 months ago when I had issues with work, I received help
from caring people. We are very grateful to AdVita fund and its volunteers
who helped us during difficult times.
Now all is well in regards to Violetta's primary diagnosis. Every year
she has tests at St. Petersburg Medical University. We are now monitored
at Allergy Unit of Children's hospital No.2 as Violetta was diagnosed
with asthma. Fortunately, she does not need medical treatment.
This year we would like for Violetta to get braces on her teeth.
She just had her lower molars taken out and the upper ones will be
removed as well. The braces are also expensive and although I have
two jobs, I cannot pay for this procedure.
Violetta is in the 10th grade and her dental issues form problems
that may stay with her for the rest of her life. We would like to ask
our supporters to help us raise money for braces. We will be
very grateful for your help.
