Hello!
Volodya was born on May 13, 2004. He is my firstborn. There were no complications during his birth. Volodya was born on his due date and weighed 3,530 gm. He cried right away and breastfed well. We were discharged when Volodya was four days old. He was gaining weight and developing well. We gave him massage. Volodya's birth brought lots of joy to our family. His grandma and grandpa enjoyed spending time with him. Our little boy was very happy and active.
When he was 2.5 years old, Volodya started preschool. He was kind, social and ready to help other children. When Volodya was 1, Volodya's father and I started having problems. I was hoping that they would resolve with time, but when our son turned two, my husband left us and I became a single mother. Fortunately, Vova's grandparents were very helpful.
I work as a salesperson and earn 4,000-6,000 rubles a month. Vova's grandma is retired. His grandpa is a crane operator and he earns 10,000-12,000 rubles.
Two weeks before he was hospitalized, Vova developed a cough. Before that, he started bruising easily. At first, we thought he fell down at preschool, because he is a very active boy. We called the doctor. He took x-rays of Vova and told us he had pneumonia of both lungs. We were taken to a hospital in Luga. At the hospital, the doctors discovered abnormalities in Vova's blood test and sent him by ambulance to Children's City hospital No.1 in St. Petersburg. At the hospital, the doctors confirmed that Vova has lymphoblastic leukemia, high risk.
We are now at the hospital.

Update as of February 27, 2008. Hello! Vova completed the first block. The first day was very difficult. Vova had a high temperature and we could not bring it down all night. On the fifth day, he got rashes all over his body and chemical burns on his legs. The largest spot was on the bone of his foot and it hurt for awhile. Vova had high temperature all week. Then he had cough that made him vomit at times. His stomach hurt so much that we had to call the doctor several nights. At the end, Vova got bronchitis. For two and a half weeks he suffered from bad cough, stomachaches, diarrhea and fever. After the therapy with antibiotics, Vova started feeling better. And now we finally got to the second block.
Thank you for your support in advance.

Update as of March 6, 2008. We completed the second block and thought it would not be too bad. However, Vova started vomiting constantly and then he got diarrhea too. He stopped eating at all. For the last two weeks, he has not eaten anything. It turned out, he has liver problems and his test results are abnormal. We are waiting for test results for hepatitis. We are scared to think what else may be awaiting us.
We are very grateful to everyone who cares for us. We would like to express our gratitude to AdVita fund and Dima in particular.
Thank you in advance for your help and support.

Update as of April 1, 2008. Vova completed the third block. His stomach hurt a lot, he had temperature and diarrhea. Then he seemed to get better. We hoped that Vova could come home for a weekend, but it did not happen. Vova's blood counts started to drop. They fell so low that he needed thrombocyte infusion, as he was getting more and more bruises every day.
The doctors started to stimulate leukocyte growth because Vova got sick.
Vova became very nervous and short-tempered. He is taking medications, but so far they are not helping. He cannot leave his hospital room and we cannot air it out, although air is very stale. We had to by an air ionizer.
We will soon start preparing for the fourth block. Thank you for your help and support!

Update as of May 7, 2008. Fortunately, Vova completed the fifth block with almost no side effects, except for high temperature. And finally, for the first time in four months, he was able to come home.
It was difficult to return to the hospital. We are now waiting for the blood counts to recover before starting the sixth block. Vova's thrombocytes are now down and he needs help from blood donors. We are enormously grateful to everyone who helps and supports us at this difficult time.

Update as of May 23, 2008. We completed the last high-dosage chemotherapy block. On the sixth day Vova had severe pains in his stomach and mouth. He developed terrible stomatitis and stopped eating and drinking. For the last three nights we could barely get some sleep.
We go to the laser therapy and it seems Vova's lips stopped bleeding and started healing.
Every day is very difficult. Vova cannot drink any medications. Rinsing of his mouth is very hard too.
We are hoping that soon Vova will feel better and he will be able to get up, eat and drink! Thank you for your help, support and understanding! We are enormously grateful to Vova's doctors and nurses!

Vova feels well. He runs around and plays.
He was found to have a cyst under his knee. For now, if it does not grow, the doctors decided to leave it alone. At first, we will complete the main treatment.

Update as of May 20, 2011. Volodya completed two cycles of chemotherapy. Based on latest test results, he is in remission. One more cycle is planned followed by radiation therapy. Volodya feels rather well, but is very tired of treatment.

Update as of July 31, 2011. Volodya completed 5th cycle of chemotherapy. He has 6 more cycles to go. He feels rather well, but misses home.

Update as of September 22, 2011. Volodya has had another two chemotherapy courses during August and beginning of September. The seventh course was especially hard for the boy: he was very weak, had no appetite and there were problems with the mucosae. The blood counts are now rising. Volodya was so happy that he was allowed to go home for a few days. The next chemotherapy course is to start shortly.

Update as of February 6, 2012. In the end of February, once the blood counts get back to normal (at present leukocyte counts are very low) Volodya will have the first of the four scheduled reinductions. Volodya's mother has not agreed to the bone marrow transplantation yet, which is why the bone marrow donor search has not been initiated.

Update as of March 1, 2012. Vova completed radiation and is gradually getting his appetite back. His blood counts are still low, and re-induction was not yet started. Vova is at home and studying as a homeschooler. Unfortunately, Vova has no matching bone marrow donors at the registry, and his parents do not agree to haploidentical transplantation. As soon as he recovers, chemotherapy will be continued.
