Varya Ogneva was born on April 12, 2000. On April 2, 2002 she entered First City
Children's hospital, where she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
accompanied with chronic pyelonephritis. Two days later, she started receiving
polychemotherapy and in May 2002 the first hematological remission was achieved.
Varya continued receiving chemotherapy until September 5, 2002.
Varya has good indications for unrelated bone marrow transplant. The search for
a donor was initiated, but no matching donors were found in neither Russian, nor
European registries. Fortunately, several matching donors were found in USA.
Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, USA
offered us their help with providing Varya with transplant operation on the condition
that Varya's relatives will pay for her and her parents' air travel and lodging expenses.
In March 2003, Varya is due to visit USA for the initial consultation, where the
issues surrounding the upcoming transplant operation will be finalized.
Unfortunately, Varya's parents are unable to pay for the trip and need help with
collecting the necessary amount.
Updated as of March 19, 2003.
Based on the results of the initial consultation, Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
agreed to take Varya for transplant operation, as she is in a good hematological remission.
Varya is already in USA and the transplant is planned for June or July 2003. Varya’s relatives
will be responsible for covering 15% of total living expenses (approximately $15 a day).
The rest of the expenses will be paid by the hospital.

On August 1, 2003 Varya had a bone marrow transplant operation in USA.
We are very grateful to "Aeroflot - Russian Airline", which gave 90%
discount on air ticket for Varya and 50% discount for her parents.
In September, Varya developed GVHD (graft vs. host disease).
She is very weak and refuses to walk.
Updated as of March 10, 2004.
Varvara Ogneva is under the observation at our department after transplantation conducted at
the USA clinic. She feels good and has no signs of any complications after transplantation
or therapy she's got. She receives the immunosuppressive therapy - cyclosporine A, but it's
doses are being gradually decreased. Also there is a considerable amount of so called
subsidiary therapy - antibiotic, antifungal and antivirus medications, vitamins etc.
Updated as of August 19, 2004.
A year had passed since Varya received bone marrow transplant. She feels well, but we need
to go for a scheduled examination in the US. The total cost of testing and transportation
will be approximately $4,000. We will be very grateful to those who will find the opportunity
to help us.
