Hello,
My name is Anya Vasilieva. I have a son, his name is Stas. He is 2 years
and 10 months old. Stas was born in Velikiy Novgorod on October 1, 2008.
He has many interests – he likes listening to music, dancing, drawing, and
his favorite pastime is playing with toy cars, he can do that for hours.
Stas attended his kindergarten with pleasure. He was a happy, cheerful, kind,
active boy until he fell ill.
It started with acute respiratory illness. After one week of treatment,
his body temperature was still high. Our district doctor sent us to the
Regional Children Hospital in Novgorod, where my son was almost immediately
diagnosed with leukemia and bilateral pneumonia on the top of things. Stas
was admitted to intensive care unit. It is impossible to describe what a shock
it was. We could not understand how it could have happened to our child.
However, the reality was that our son was ill and we had to save him!
Fortunately, in two days our boy was transferred to an therapy ward and some
days later he was referred to Raisa Gorbacheva Center of Pediatric Hematology
and Transplantology in St. Petersburg, where the diagnosis was confirmed and
treatment started.
Stas has already undergone the first chemotherapy cycle, and right after it,
the pulmonary fungal infection – aspergillosis – was diagnosed. Vfend, an
antifungal agent, is vital for Stas to overcome the infection. However this
medication is very expensive. One pack per week is needed; and the cost
is 27,000 rubles a pack. The treatment course normally takes several months
to a year. Unfortunately, we do not have that much money. Stas’s father is an
assembler and I am on a sick leave to care for my son. Please help us raise
money for medication. We will appreciate any help! God bless you!
Update as of September 13, 2011.
Stas finished the second chemotherapy cycle under the regimen.
He is now recovering and being followed at the day hospital.
He feels rather well. Stas still needs Vfend - one pack that
costs 26,990 rubles lasts him 9 days.
Update as of September 26, 2011.
Stas started another cycle of chemotherapy. He tolerates it rather well,
but has issues with liver and needs Heptral. Vfend is also needed.
Update as of October 28, 2011.
Stas is continuing chemotherapy. During therapy he was diagnosed
with cardiomyopathy and it was treated. His liver function is
also gradually improving. Control CT scan is planned for November 8th.
Update as of November 29, 2011.
Based on CT scan, Stas has improvement in his lungs. His
liver counts have normalized as well. Stas feels well.
He will soon start hormonal therapy (re-induction).
Update as of December 26, 2011.
Stas is undergoing another cycle of chemotherapy. He feels well.
There are now holiday celebrations at the hospital for the little
patients, and Stas enjoys participating in them and practicing rhymes
for the Father Frost.
Update as of January 18, 2012.
Stas is feeling ok, the treatment is going as per the protocol.
There were problems with the venous access, so a "deep venous line"
catheter was installed.
Update as of February 22, 2012.
Stas feels well. He is undergoing maintenance chemotherapy with
Purinethol and Methotrexate.
