Hello!
I am a father of Shamil Gasymzade.
On May 20th while playing at his preschool, Shamil fell down and got jaw
trauma with large swelling. We went to a doctor who removed one of Shamil's
teeth and installed drainage. We were told to return for a checkup in a
month. When we came back, we were told that we better go to see an
oncologist in Baku.
After biopsy and other tests, Shamil was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma.
He had operation and radiation therapy. Then the doctors told us they did
everything they could and that Shamil now needed chemotherapy. However,
there are no pediatric oncologists in Baku. We were advised to travel to
Russia for treatment.
We came to St. Petersburg and underwent testing. Here Shamil got a new
diagnosis: malignant b-cell lymphoma with metastases in neck and
supraclavicular lymph nodes and skull bone. It means the initial diagnosis
was wrong and our son received inappropriate treatment. We are currently on
treatment at Petrov Oncology Research Institute where Shamil is receiving
chemotherapy.
Since we are foreign citizens, we pay full cost of treatment. I am the only
breadwinner in the family. Shamil's mother stays with him at the hospital.
In Azerbaijan we have three more children who are now with their grandmother.
Please help us with paying for treatment and medications. We are very
grateful to you for any help in advance.

Update as of December 10, 2009.
My son is undergoing another round of chemotherapy with
Doxorubicin and Vincristine. He feels well. His temperature
and blood test results are normal.
We would like to thank everyone for help!

Update as of January 12, 2010.
On January 13th Shamil will start third chemotherapy round.
He feels well, eats well, plays, draws, sings and reads.
We are hoping he will stay just as positive until the end
of treatment.
However, with the start of the new course,
we have new problems. We need money for
medications and tests.
Since October 2009 we paid 70,000 rubles for treatment.
Our family catastrophically lacks money. Please help us with
paying for treatment and renting an apartment.
Thank you in advance!
Shamil's father
Update as of January 27, 2010.
Shamil is undergoing another cycle of chemotherapy. He was prescribed
Diflucan to prevent fungal infection.
Update as of February 16, 2010.
We were transferred to R. Gorbacheva Pediatric Hematology and
Transplantology Institute for further treatment. After an examination,
Shamil is planned to go for autologous transplantation.
Shamil's father
Update as of February 20, 2010.
Examination results testify to stabilization but Shamil is not in remission
yet. He will now have his cells harvested for autotransplantation, after
that the boy will go back to the Research Institute of Oncology for two
more chemotherapy courses. Then there will be another examination which
will help make a decision on the transplantation.
Update as of March 23, 2010.
Shamil underwent another course of therapy with MabThera and was hospitalized
at BMT clinic where his stem cells were harvested for autologous bone marrow
transplantation. He is now at the rented apartment where he is recovering.
The doctors plan to administer him another cycle of chemotherapy and after
complete examination hospitalize him at BMT clinic for autologous bone marrow
transplantation.
Update as of April 3, 2010.
Shamil suffers from severe type of stomatitis. He was also
diagnosed with a fungal infection and needs therapy with
intravenous Vfend at 400 mg a day.
Update as of April 30, 2010.
Shamil needs to undergo two more chemotherapy cycles prior to autologous
transplantation. We are sincerely grateful to Mehriban Bagirova, a volunteer
of Azerbaijan Association of Leukemia Patients and Mireldar Babaev, chief
pediatric hematologist of Azerbaijan, for agreeing to work with the
doctors in St. Petersburg.
This will allow initiating a discussion regarding coordinated treatment
of our son locally, in Baku. We are also grateful to Grant Life fund
and Aeroflot airline for providing us with free tickets under Charity
Miles program (we only had to pay for the fuel surcharge).
Advita Fund's donations sent to all patients were used to pay for
the medications necessary to complete treatment. After the two
more chemotherapy cycles, Shamil will be examined and autologous
transplantation will be discussed.
Update as of May 19, 2010.
Unfortunately, Shamil did not start treatment in Azerbaijan. The clinic
where the therapy was planned had closed for repairs. We have not been
able to get in touch with Shamil's father to find out whether he plans to
look for another clinic or return to St. Petersburg, as his contact phone
number does not work. We do not know what is Shamil's condition right now.
The plan was for him to undergo two more cycles of chemotherapy, after
which autologous transplant was to be discussed.
Update as of September 22, 2010.
We got a call from Shamil's father: he feels well and there is no progression.
Shamil has stable disease and tumor has not grown. At this time, Shamil is
not receiving any treatment. He goes to school (1st grade). Since he is not in
remission, although disease is stable, treatment continuation is still considered.
Shamil had very hard time tolerating chemotherapy and had many complications
that threatened his life. Currently, Azerbaijani specialists are monitoring his condition
and if progression is seen, further treatment options will be discussed. Shamil's parents
asked to thank everyone who has been helping them with Shamil's treatment in Russia.
