Hello,
I would like to tell you my story. My name is Svetlana Luchinskaya.
I am 37 and live in Murmansk. I missed the first signs of the tumor
appearance. Although I suffered from headaches for six months, the
doctors explained them away by hypertension, exhaustion, and so on.
The first obvious symptoms appeared in May 2009, but even then the
diagnosis was established as neurology-related, and my treatment
included physical therapy, massages and injections. When I had to
literally drag my leg when walking and I loss all function in my arm,
I was just advised to go to the seaside and swim a lot. At that point
I made a decision to go for MRI myself. On July 13, 2009 a new stage
of my life began: I was diagnosed with glioblastoma of left thalamus.
On August 20, 2009 I had a surgical removal of a tumor. Since September 3rd,
I went through radiation therapy and 13 cycles of chemotherapy. I lost 26 kg,
and my liver, kidneys, and stomach were affected.
In January 2011 two tumors were removed from my arm. But I am alive! I am
happy that my family is by me. My family is my backbone. Unfortunately, my
financial resources have been depleted in the fight with an invisible enemy.
And regular examinations take a lot of money. Brain MRI costs 8,500 rubles
and PET costs 16,000 rubles; I also often have to pay for consultations,
encephalograms, and other tests. I need complete workup every three months.
This is why I would like to ask for help. The tumor must be closely monitored,
because it is like a mine with fuse which can explode any minute. In case I need
Gamma-Knife surgery, there is nobody we can count on, since the government
does not pay for such operations. And I have a teenage daughter who needs me.
Thank you for reading my story. Take care of yourself and your family!
Update as of July 27, 2011.
I came for MRI and PET on July 13th. I had those studies as well as a
consultation with a neurosurgeon and an encephalogram. I was prescribed
a three-month course of treatment with hormonal therapy and immunomodulators.
If the next MRI and PET confirm remission, a necrotic lesion will
be considered for surgical removal. The next evaluation is in October.
Thank you for your help - without your support I would not have been
able to have control tests.
Svetlana
Update as of November 22, 2011.
Hello! I would like to share results of the last examinations and opinion
of neurosurgeons in regards to new lesions. MRI images were reviewed at
Burdenko Institute and for now they cannot determine with certainty whether
the lesions represent a relapse or necrosis, as PET scan is not
conclusive at this size.
Therefore, it was decided to perform the next MRI study in late December,
but due to holidays, I made an appointment for January 13th. I pray that it is
not a relapse.
I still have a problem with paying for expensive venotonics and immunomodulators,
as well as antispastics. I also developed acne, as my immune system is too weak.
I don't feel very well and spasticity had increased. I am hoping that AdVita
fund will help me with paying for MRI.
Svetlana
Update as of April 13, 2012.
In January I had an MRI scan performed at the N.P.Bekhtereva Institute of
Human Brain. Things remained the same, the lesion has not increased in
size and was not found during the PET. I felt very bad after the
contrast agent infusion, having come home with an edema on my face.
I had to see a number of doctors.
That's when a new trouble came: I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid
carcinoma with metastases in the lymph nodes. I am going to have a
surgery on Murmansk because I was refused a quota for treatment at
the V.A.Almazov Federal Heart, Blood and Endocrinology Center - I was
told that such surgeries can be performed in my home town.
The fact that this is my second cancer and no one knows how the tumor
in my brain is going to behave was not taken into consideration. After
the surgery I will need computed tomography of the whole body to track
the possible metastases.
This requires a huge sum. I am kindly asking all my supporters for help.
I am going to struggle till the end. Thank you all so much!
Svetlana
Update as of May 3, 2012.
I have an MRI scheduled on May 10, the approximate cost is 17,500 rubles.
The proper time for thyroid surgery and the subsequent treatment with
radioactive iodine depend on the MRI results.
