Sasha died on August 31, 2010

|
Hello!
My name is Alexander Kurenkov. I am 23. I was born and grew up in Volkhov in
Leningrad region. I have two siblings: a brother Vitya and a sister Anechka.
I finished 9th grade and after receiving vocational education as a welder
started working at a local water utility at Oktyabrskaya railroad.
In August 2009 after just two months of work, I was admitted to the
district hospital with skull trauma. There I was found to have abnormal
blood test results. Since there are no hematologists in our district,
I was transferred to St. Petersburg, to Leningradskaya Regional hospital,
where I learned my terrifying diagnosis: acute myeloblastic leukemia.
And so a week after week of therapy stretched out for a long time.
I received two cycles of chemotherapy and could not leave hospital
walls for over 3 months. Unfortunately, both cycles were unsuccessful.
The doctors are telling me that I have no options to overcome my
disease other than allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. One of my
siblings might be a good match, but due to our financial situation,
we are unable to find out. The typing has to be paid for.
We are hoping for help of good people.
Thank you in advance from the bottom of my heart.
Medical conclusion
Update as of January 19, 2010.
Thanks to help from the residents of Krasnodar region and regional
administration, the money for the donor search for Sasha was raised.
Fifteen thousand euros were already transferred to Germany and
the money for delivery of transplant was reserved.
We are enormously grateful to everyone who has helped!
Update as of January 27, 2010.
Fortunately, Sasha's sister matched as a donor, so he will not
need to search for an unrelated donor. Sasha was hospitalized
at R. Gorbacheva Pediatric Hematology and Transplantology Institute.
Update as of March 14, 2010.
Transplantation took place on schedule. Sasha is now under the watch
of intensive care specialists.
Update as of April 3, 2010.
Sasha is at the hospital for now, but he feels rather well.
The doctors suspect that he may have invasive aspergillosis
in his lungs. Sasha was tested and the doctors are waiting
for the results to start the therapy.
Update as of May 19, 2010.
Sasha is recovering after transplantation. He was discharged for outpatient
monitoring. He feels rather well except for chronic cough. Sasha's leukocyte
count remains low so he has to go to the clinic for tests regularly. He
needs to take Orungal to prevent aspergillosis.
Update as of July 27, 2010.
Sasha was taken to Regional Clinical hospital with high bilirubin and ALT count.
As he does not have infectious or toxic complications, the specialists of
Pediatric Hematology and Transplantology Institute believe it is caused
by GVHD in his liver. Appropriate therapy was started. Sasha is in remission
in regards to leukemia, and the puncture results are good.
