Other Sasha's photos

We are asking for help with saving our girl's life! Her name is Sasha Kislichnaya, she was born on April 4, 2003. On March 11, 2008 she was diagnosed with teleangiectatic osteosarcoma at Blokhin Russian Oncology Centre in Moscow.
On March 13, 2008 she was admitted to Kemerovo Regional Oncology Clinic with a diagnosis of giant-cell tumor of the left femoral bone. To confirm the diagnosis the test results were sent to Blokhin Russian Oncology Centre. Since time was being lost in Kemerovo, while Sasha's disease was advancing quickly, her mom decided for Sasha to undergo the first chemotherapy block in Russia.
Now that we know the situation and our doctors' prognoses for children with such a diagnosis in Russia, we decided to do all we can for saving Sasha and have her undergo therapy and operation in Germany.
In Germany we have relatives who came for help to Aachen Hospital. We sent the doctors Sasha's test results and images. They looked at them and said that they can cure Sasha with 90% probability.
Marina Kislichnaya, Sasha's mom and my sister, is divorced and is bringing her daughter up on her own. Due to our relatives' and friends' help we were able to pay 30,000 euros for 30% of the treatment. At the present moment we have signed an agreement with University Hospital Aachen (Germany) for treatment and operation from April 21, 2008. The preliminary estimate of the treatment cost is 90,000 euros. It is very hard for us to pay the full cost of treatment in clinic in Aachen (Germany).
The hospital administration agreed to receive the payment for the treatment in three stages. The first payment of 30,000 euros has already been transferred to the hospital's account. The rest, 60,000 euros, needs to be raised. The treatment will last from 6 to 8 months, but if the necessary amount is not transferred to the clinic, the treatment will be interrupted.
Since April 21 Sasha and her mom have been staying at the hospital in Germany. Having examined Sasha, the German doctors found some hearing loss and kidney crystallization after the chemotherapy in Kemerovo. The doctors in Russia have not discovered these problems at Sasha's discharge.
On behalf of my sister and niece, I will be very grateful to you for your response and help with raising 60,000 euros for University Hospital Aachen bill.

Sincerely,
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of May 19, 2008. Sasha is now undergoing chemotherapy in Aachen. The operation is scheduled for June 16th and will take place in Berlin in cooperation with the specialists from the University clinic in Aachen. The clinics will keep a separate accounting for the charges. We need to pay additional 30,000 euros by June 16th. The last 30,000 euros will be needed after the operation.

Update as of June 14, 2008. The operation was moved to June 24th and it will take place in Aachen rather than Berlin. It will last close to 10 hours. Sasha already underwent the seventh chemotherapy block. After the operation, the whole picture will become clear.

Update as of June 27, 2008. On June 24, 2008 Sasha had an operation that lasted 9 hours.
On June 25th she started bleeding and she had a reconstructive surgery that lasted 5.5 hours. Overall, both operations were successful.
As a result of the operations, Sasha's damaged femoral bone was removed and replaced by tibia. The removed extremity needs to be replaced by prosthesis that costs 20,000 euros.
Currently Sasha is under anesthesia, she receives pain relief through the spine.
Sasha's parents have sold their apartment to pay a third of their debt for the operation, 30,000 euros. As of now, two-thirds of the debt are repaid, and in the near future Sasha's parents need to pay the remaining balance, 30,000 euros, as well as pay for prosthesis (20,000 euros).
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the help we received and continue receiving, to everyone who showed they care for us.
Sasha after operation

Update as of July 8, 2008. Sasha is in a stable condition. The swelling on her leg is going away. The bandages were taken off and she got a breathing corset on her leg. During the operation, the samples of the damaged bone were taken to determine and clarify the optimal chemotherapy intensity. The tests will be performed at three different clinics to ensure correct diagnosis.

Update as of July 11, 2008. Today Sasha had an operation and the large post-operative scars were removed. Sasha is in a normal condition.

Update as of July 16, 2008. We managed to obtain a significant discount for prosthesis for Sasha. The new bill is for 6,500 euros. We also received a price quote for chemotherapy that Sasha needs. It would cost her 40,000 euros.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of July 23, 2008. Sasha completed the first chemotherapy course. She does gymnastics and works on her leg. On Friday she will have a visit with a professor regarding the next stage of her treatment.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of July 25, 2008. Our news is not very good. Sasha had tests that showed that after seven chemotherapy blocks (prior to operation) the cancerous cell quantity was 40%. She was prescribed more intensive chemotherapy (the dosage was increased more than 4 times).
The plan is to administer 15 chemotherapy courses.
Sasha's stitches in her leg do not heal well due to abnormal blood test results.
We are out of money. Please help us with anything! This is our last hope.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of August 6, 2008. Sasha is still at the hospital. Her scar is not healing well after the operation. The blood counts have been normalized.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of August 8, 2008. Today Sasha had an operation. The scar that was not healing after previous operation was stitched up again. Sasha is feeling OK. As soon as she heals, she will start second chemotherapy block.

Update as of September 10, 2008. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the West-East Friendship Society of Saarland and David Davydov's mom for helping Sasha. The money left after David's treatment was used for Sasha's therapy, in agreement with David's mom.
The West-East Friendship Society of Saarland had acted as a reliable and selfless partner whose job was to manage the money after David's passing.

Update as of September 14, 2008. After the third block, Sasha's leukocyte counts plummeted. She developed an inflammation of her scar and was operated under the anesthesia. Her scar was cleared and Sasha is now in a normal condition.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of October 8, 2008. Sasha completed the fifth chemotherapy round and was discharged for two weeks. She spent a week with her relatives, but then her leukocyte counts plummeted, then thrombocyte counts, and her temperature rose.
Sasha was returned to the hospital where her kidneys were rinsed. She has temperature for three days now and needed a blood transfusion today.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of October 12, 2008. Sasha is still at the hospital, but her leukocyte and thrombocyte counts are within norm now. The medications she was given caused a complication on her leg (she developed a fistula). The doctors cleaned it out today.
Sasha still needs to undergo 10 chemotherapy rounds. As of September 24, she had 24,000 euros in her account. We are hoping that this money will cover the remaining treatment.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of October 24, 2008. Sasha completed the sixth round of chemotherapy and she was discharged from the hospital. She now stays with our relatives. Unfortunately, it is already clear that the money that was previously raised will not cover Sasha's full course of treatment. She will need additional 25,000 euros or so. In the next few days we will get a bill.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of October 29, 2008. We received a price offer from Uniklinik Aachen. Sasha needs additional 25,000 euros to complete her treatment.

Update as of December 14, 2008. Sasha is through with her ninth chemotherapy course, and there were complications: she had mucositis and had to get blood transfusions. At present Sasha is at her relatives', she does physical exercises and is learning to walk on her prosthesis with one crutch.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of December 15, 2008. The department for paid treatment of the hospital informed us today that we are out of funds. Another EUR 25,000 are needed to finish the treatment. We kindly ask you for your help!
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of December 22, 2008. Sasha completed the tenth chemotherapy cycle and feels well. She stays with our relatives and dies exercises for her leg and walks on her prosthesis.
We have run out of money on our account and Sasha receives treatment on a loan. My constant fear is that Sasha will be discharged from the clinic before her treatment is completed, because of the lack of money.
I do not know where else to go to ask for help. Aif-Kind Heart fund had promised to give 60,000 rubles for Sasha. We are enormously grateful. However, Sasha still needs more money for her treatment.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of January 19, 2009. We are sincerely grateful to our anonymous supporter who we met through Russian help Fund for covering the FULL cost of the prosthesis and Sasha's therapy.

Update as of February 20, 2009. Sasha completed 13th course of chemotherapy. She had complications and needed blood transfusion. Sasha is now feeling well. She was discharged from the hospital to rest and stays with our relatives.
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of March 9, 2009. Sasha completed the last chemotherapy course and she is now being examined. She feels well. On March 16th her prosthesis will be ready.
We reserved plane tickets for March 28th. Fortunately, Sasha's suffering is coming to an end. We are all hoping that she will be fine.
We are grateful to everyone who responded and helped us. Thank you very much! God bless you!
Elena Kvashnina

Update as of April 4, 2009 Sasha completed treatment and returned home.

Update as of April 5, 2009 Finally, my daughter Sasha and I returned home. Thank you very much to all of you!
Sasha is now at home and she is monitored by the doctors. We are hoping all will be well with us. In a year, we will travel to Germany for the next prosthesis installation. During this year, Sasha needs to learn to walk well and exercise her foot for the next prosthesis. If someone has any questions about Sasha's disease, I will be glad to reply.
Once again, thank you very much! God bless you!

Update as of March 6, 2010 It has been almost a year since we were discharged from a hospital in Aachen. We now need to return there, as the doctors will discuss surgery to remove a plate that crosses leg bones. They recommend that Sasha undergoes surgery in their hospital. She will also need to have a new prosthesis installed.
The clinic gave us a cost estimate for 3,500 euros, but I am not sure how much it will cost for us to live at the clinic. I am concerned that we will not be able to afford it on our own (invoice from the clinic: page 1, page 2).
We have helped us so much in the past, and I hope that you will be able to help us again. Thank you in advance for any help!
Sasha's mom

Update as of May 26, 2010 We received corrected bill from Aachen University Clinic.
The surgery and a new prosthesis will cost 10,000 euros. This money has to be paid prior to our visit. Please help.
Sasha's mom

Update as of March 9, 2011 Sasha and I are planning to fly to Aachen on April 23. Two roundtrip tickets will cost approximately 60,000 rubles. The sooner we buy the tickets, the less they will cost. We cannot afford the tickets, unfortunately. Please help us!
