Dear friends,
We decided to have a second child at a relatively advanced age, as our older daughter became chronically ill. Maybe that was
the reason for Serezha's weak health. We worked hard to overcome his many illnesses when he was a preschooler.
Serezha had to be home schooled due to severe dysgraphia and dyslexia, and a neurological illness. Despite difficulties, he
was a very responsible student! Serezha lacks social interaction with his peers, and he became interested in computers, which
he learned on his own. He also loves horses and he took horse-riding lessons whenever he could.
We tried to make Serezha's life easier for him and give him opportunities to develop. Unfortunately, when Serezha turned 15,
we had to face another obstacle. Serezha was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of his left femur. He is now receiving treatment
at pediatric oncology unit of hospital No.31 in St. Petersburg.
This illness requires long and difficult treatment, expensive drugs and examinations. We retired a long time ago, and we do not
have the money for Serezha's treatment. Still, we try not to despair and we are hoping to overcome this terrible disease.
We are in the very tight financial situation, and we sincerely hope for the help from the kind people.

Update as of October 15, 2009.
Serezha studies at 11th grade program at home. He already turned 18,
so he was transferred out of pediatric unit and is now being monitored
at his place of residence.
Recently, Serezha underwent tests and MRI scan showed that his lungs
are clear. However, the x-ray results show that his bone above the
endoprosthesis has split. Sergei complains of leg pains and does
not walk much.
Serezha was referred for an orthopedic consultation at Military
Medical Academy and recommended to increase workouts gradually.
Serezha's parents bought him a treadmill. He walks on it and
tries to exercise his leg. Serezha now goes for physical
exams once every 6 months.
Update as of February 17, 2010.
Sergei undergoes testing every six months, and he is doing well
in regards to the main diagnosis. However, he does not walk well,
as he feels pain in his leg during movement. Sergei does not go
outside at all, and only moves around the apartment.
Serezha received a consultation from an orthopedic specialist
from Vreden Institute where he was told that his prosthesis
may have been fractured. Serezha needs two surgeries – the
first to check on the prosthesis to see whether it is broken
and requires replacement, or whether pads need to be replaced
due to wear. If surgeries are done at Vreden Institute, the
first one will cost 20,000 rubles, and the second one may be
paid for by a federal quota.
Serezha's parents got in touch with Prof. Novoselov from Mechnikov
clinic who installed prosthesis for Serezha. He too confirmed that
possibility of prosthesis fracture exists. Also, both surgeries
could be performed at Mechnikov clinic under quota. At the end
of the week, it will be more clear where the first surgery
will take place.
It is likely that Serezha will need new prosthesis pads
(same German manufacturer as his prosthesis).
Update as of February 28, 2010.
Based on results of consultation with orthopedic specialists,
it was decided to combine revisionary and main surgeries.
The operation will require pads of the same manufacturer that
made Sergei's prosthesis.
Afterwards, Serezha will need a course of rehabilitation therapy.
The date of the surgery is being verified.
Update as of April 15, 2010.
There are no changes in Sergei's condition. The issue with his
surgery has not been resolved yet, the decision is being postponed
all the time. Sergei is finishing school this year, he'll have
exams so the surgery has to be decided upon as soon as possible.
Update as of May 27, 2010.
Sergei was discharged from the hospital after the operation.
He feels better, although his temperature was rising to 38.7C
until yesterday. He is now taking antibiotics and his temperature
is getting back to normal. His leg is better: he can now bend
it and straighten it out. Serezha is preparing for his exams,
as this year he is graduating from high school.
Update as of March 14, 2011.
Serezha recently had planned tests and had a consultation
regarding prosthesis with his professor. The leg is fine and
Sergei feels well, but an x-ray showed a lesion in his rib.
Sergei had CT scan at Children's hospital No.5 which confirmed
a bony lesion. He will need a surgery to remove it and send for
tests. A surgery is now being planned.
