Renata died on March 15, 2008
|
My name is Renata Maksudova. I am 19 and live in Kazan. When I was 13, I was diagnosed with
lymphogranulomatosis (Hodgkin disease). Unfortunately, my disease was progressing, and I was having relapses every year.
Many times I thought about giving in to the disease. However, during the most difficult times I was fortunate to have the
support of my friends and relatives and even strangers.
In November 2004 I had bone marrow autotransplant at the hematology and bone marrow transplantology clinic of Pavlov
Medical University in St. Petersburg. To be honest, it took me awhile to agree to this operation. At the same time, I
knew that I have not done so many things, have not seen so many sights and have not felt so many feelings that it was
worth fighting for.
And I was right. In the year and a half after the transplantation, many wonderful events happened in my life. I graduated
from high school, enrolled in the Linguistics University, drew a lot of pictures, had fun with my friends and simply enjoyed
my life.
Unfortunately, in 2006 I was diagnosed with another relapse. I am not giving in; I am ready for treatment although I know
it will be very difficult. Aside from the main illness, I also have a fungal infection in my lungs, Aspergillosis. The main treatment
cannot start unless the infection is taken care of. The cost of the antifungal medication I was prescribed (Cancidas) is very
high. An ampoule of this drug costs 17,000 – 18,000 rubles, and my family is unable to pay for it.
Any help will provide me with emotional and physical support to continue my treatment.

Medical Conclusion
Updated as of December 14, 2006.
Renata is in a serious but stable condition. She is now receiving both Vfend and Cancidas, and is expected to respond
to the treatment in a few days. Renata's mother would like to express her sincere gratitude to all the donors and supporters,
and especially to the employees of Influenza Research Institute who responded to Renata and found several donors
amongst them.
Renata still needs blood donations and money for the medications! The donations were used by Renata's mom to buy
thrombocyte pool (4,900 rubles), Nutridrink nutritional drinks and mouthpieces for the nebulizer.
Thank you for helping Renata!
Updated as of December 18, 2006.
On December 15, the hospital received Cancidas, which was bought on the donation from
OOO "Gazprom Neft Invest" received during the charitable marathon.
Thanks to the donation, Renata is continuing Cancidas and Vfend therapy. She is still stable, but she is in a very serious
condition. She urgently needs blood donations – blood types III (-) and IV (-).
Update as of December 19, 2006.
Cancidas and Vfend therapy led to significant improvement in Renata's lungs. As soon as her lungs are clear, Renata will
start anti-relapse protocol. She will continue on Cancidas and Vfend for at least 10 more days.
Update as of December 26, 2006.
Renata's condition had stabilized, and she has positive dynamic in her lungs. She
is still receiving Cancidas and Vfend intravenously. Renata was transferred to the
common area. She still needs help with paying for medications.
We are enormously grateful to all the blood donors who responded and gave their blood
for Renata! By doing this, you have saved her life.
Update as of January 11, 2007.
Renata feels well, and her lungs are clear. On January 23, she will start anti-relapse chemotherapy.
Update as of January 25, 2007.
Based on the latest test results, Renata is free from any lesions. Her further
therapy is currently under discussion.
Update as of February 1, 2007.
Renata needs to have PET scan that costs 16,000 rubles to verify the results of her treatment.
The test needs to be paid for as soon as possible.
Update as of February 8, 2007:
Based on PET scan results, Renata was found to have a lesion in her lung. The CT scan
that followed discovered that Renata’s lungs are retaining fluids again. The scenarios are
being discussed: possibility of aspergillosis or relapse of lymphogranulomatosis.
Update as of February 19, 2007 .
Renata is undergoing polychemotherapy course. She feels relatively well, and her temperature is now
normal. Renata needs help from blood donors with blood type III(-) and IV(-).
Update as of March 7, 2007.
After receiving therapy, Renata has been discharged and she will be going home
to Kazan in the next few days. Thanks to everyone for their help!
Renata will have all the control tests at home. The first test will be in 28 days.
However, Renata needs to keep her aspergilla infection under control. Even though
she does not have any infected areas now, she needs to take Amphotericin and
Orungal for infection prevention. She may need future help with
buying antifungals.
We will be waiting for the news from Renata once she gets home to Kazan.
Update as of March 25, 2007.
Renata is undergoing planned chemotherapy in her hometown, Kazan. She urgently needs Orungal for a long-term intake to prevent aspergillosis
(1 package for every 4.5 days). The cost of each package in the pharmacies in St. Petersburg is 1,418 rubles.
The pharmacies in Kazan do not carry Orungal at all. We would like to ask all Renata’s supporters to send their donations to AdVita fund’s bank
account, as we plan on purchasing the drug here and transporting it to Kazan.
Update as of May 3, 2007.
Renata completed planned chemotherapy at a hospital in Kazan. She was in a severe cytopenia,
but her blood counts have recovered. Renata has had temperature for some time, and although the x-ray
did not show any problems with her lungs, she is suspected of having aspergillosis infection again.
Renata needs Vfend. Ideally, she would need Vfend for intravenous injections, 2 bottles a day for a week.
The medication would cost 98,000 rubles. Renata's doctors are currently consulting with transplantologists.
Update as of May 28, 2007.
Renata is coming to St. Petersburg on May 30th. She urgently needs help with paying for apartment
rent. She will be examined by several specialists at the BMT clinic, after which further treatment will
be determined. Most likely, Renata will be hospitalized at the Mycology Research Institute for testing and
treatment from aspergillosis, which will have to be followed by chemotherapy.
Update as of June 9, 2007.
Renata came to St. Petersburg where she is undergoing the required examinations. The
preliminary assumption is that her fungal infection is currently inactive, while her
lungs are infected with bacteria. Until the test results are ready, Renata has to take
antibiotics and Vfend. She also needs help with buying medications, paying for
tests and apartment rent.
Renata is staying in St. Petersburg with her grandmother, while her mother returned to
work in Kazan. For that reason, please send your donations to AdVita fund’s bank account
or contact Renata directly (rather than sending them to Renata' mom bank account).
Renata feels relatively well, although her temperature is slightly elevated.
Update as of June 28, 2007.
Renata's hepatitis C reactivated, and she needs therapy with Roferon and Heptral. She may also need hospitalization at Botkin hospital. Since she
is an out-of-town patient, she would have to pay for her treatment in full.
Update as of July 6, 2007.
Renata needs to continue Vfend therapy. We are sincerely grateful to Anna for
donating two packages of this drug, which will last for two weeks. Meanwhile, we
need to raise more money to ensure Renata continues the therapy.
She needs to take 2 capsules a day (200 mg each) for the next few months. A package
of Vfend that lasts a week costs 29,000 rubles.
Update as of August 5, 2007.
Renata's hepatitis is still active. She is now injected with Roferon, and in the
near future she will also need 2 packages of Rebetol (200 mg dosage). The cost of
a package is 5,700 rubles.
Renata has enough Vfend until August 14th, but she needs to continue the therapy.
She is planned for a liver biopsy in the next few days.
Update as of August 14, 2007.
Renata was hospitalized at Botkin hospital for liver biopsy. She still needs help with paying for Vfend and apartment rent.
It is also likely that she will be prescribed new medications based on the biopsy results.
Update as of August 19, 2007.
Renata had a liver biopsy, results of which are not yet known. She urgently needs to find syringe-pen Roferon-Pen for injections.
So far we were unable to locate it in the pharmacies of St. Petersburg.
Update as of August 27, 2007.
Renata was purchased a syringe pen Roferon-Pen with a set of needles. She started Roferon therapy. The specialists are reviewing the results of her liver biopsy.
Update as of September 9, 2007.
Renata is feeling worse. Her lymph nodes are enlarged and she has a lot of
fluid in her lungs. She is hospitalized at BMT clinic.
Update as of September 16, 2007.
After the therapy, Renata's condition improved, but she still needs Vfend and
Ampholip (2 bottles a day). The cost of 1 package of Vfend (14 capsules) that lasts
a week varies from 25,000 - 28,000 rubles. A bottle of Ampholip costs
6,000 rubles. Renata has not received any donation for a while.
Update as of October 12, 2007
Renata is scheduled for six chemotherapy sessions. All that time she will need to take Vfend and Ampholip. One package of Vfend in capsules of
200 mg costs 28,000 rubles and it lasts a week. A bottle of Ampholip costs 6,000 rubles, and Renata needs a bottle a day. Therefore, Renata needs 60,000 rubles a week
for the next four months.
She also needs help from blood donors with blood type III(-) and IV(-).
Update as of November 7, 2007
Based on the test results, Renata has strong positive changes. Her lungs are practically clear of fungal infection and contrast agent does
not accumulate. However, she has a complication due to chemotherapy. She developed tachycardia and her blood pressure is low.
Renata is now at BMT clinic and she needs blood transfusions from blood donors with blood type I(-), III(-) or IV(-).
After a week she will be examined and possibly hospitalized at Deep Mycosis Research Institute. As of now, Renata is off Ampholip. She takes only
Vfend.
Update as of November 11, 2007.
Renata's condition worsened again. She has fluid in her lungs and high temperature. She is now at intensive care unit
in BMT clinic where she is receiving antibiotics and antiviral drugs.
Update as of November 13, 2007.
Renata's condition somewhat improved after therapy with antibiotics. Her temperature
is back to normal. However, Renata is still at intensive care unit.
Update as of November 19, 2007.
Renata needs 20 bottles of Ampholip that costs 6,000 rubles a bottle. Her doctors are
starting her on chemotherapy, which has to be accompanied by antifungal medications
because of Renata's condition.
Update as of December 5, 2007.
Renata was prescribed Roferon therapy three times a week for the next few months. A cartridge for Roferon
foam that lasts two weeks costs 7,000 rubles.
Update as of December 10, 2007.
Renata will need a bottle of Ampholip a day for the next several months. A bottle of the drug costs 6,000 rubles.
Update as of December 30, 2007.
Renata was discharged from the clinic for the outpatient monitoring. She feels
relatively well.
Update as of January 24, 2008.
After the New Year, Renata's leukocyte counts fell and she developed a lump on her leg.
She is now receiving antibacterial therapy with Zyvox and Meronem and antifungal
therapy with Vfend. Renata is also continuing hepatitis C therapy with Roferon and
Rebetol and stimulates her blood cell production with Granocyte and Eprex.
Renata feels relatively well. She stays perky.
Update as of January 30, 2008.
Based on the results of PCR test, Renata has undetectable viral load of hepatitis C,
which means she responded well to therapy with Roferon. The infectious diseases
specialist is happy with the results. The therapy will continue for six months to
strengthen the result.
Renata has not made progress on her main illness. Her hemoglobin counts
rose slightly to 78.
Update as of February 9, 2008.
Renata did not tolerate well the last injection with Vinblastine. All of her blood
counts dropped and she had severe nosebleeds. She critically needs help from blood
donors with blood type III(-) and IV(-).
