Hello!
Please help our son Oleg Gagulin!
As a kid, Oleg was curious and healthy. He learned to
read at the age of three and when he was in the 1st grade
he started developing interest in studying electrical
engineering manuals. He was an A-student at school. Oleg
practiced both judo and soccer and completed studies at music
school. He continued his high school studies at Samarskaya Regional
school for advanced math and physics. Our son always studied well,
he participated in extracurricular activities and qualified for a
First Level in chess. His dream was to study at Moscow Institute
of Physics and Technology.
In August 2008 Oleg took part at a National Chess Tournament and in
September he got sick with tonsillitis. His body temperature was as
high as 41C but doctors explained away his condition by an uncommon
strain of the virus. Two weeks later, when a blood test revealed an
abnormally high leukocyte count, it became clear that this is something
much more serious than tonsillitis. Thus, at the age of 17 our son was
admitted to Samarskaya 1st Pediatric City Hospital with a diagnosis of
acute lymphoblastic leukemia, high risk.
A grueling therapy started. Our son stayed at the hospital until May 2009.
Over this period he underwent chemotherapy followed by radiation treatment.
Due to his analytical skills and ability to notice smallest details he
understood the severity of his disease. Nevertheless he managed to
complete his 11th grade program, including advanced math and physics
course, all by himself. Oleg was taking his Unified State Exams along
with other students, despite the fact that they coincided with the
radiation treatment and he did not feel well, to say the least. By July
Oleg was in a more stable condition so he decided to enroll into college.
Unfortunately, because of the disease he could not study in Moscow
(doctors did not allow him full time study or getting a technical degree).
For that reason, Oleg entered a correspondence department at Samara State
Economic University.
During his studies Oleg was receiving maintenance chemotherapy and had
weekly blood tests. At the same time he learned to play the electric
guitar and formed a rock band with his friends. He composed music and
played solo guitar. He kept himself in shape with chess also: he continued
practicing by himself and dreamed of participating in tournaments again.
Everything seemed to go well and our son started planning for transfer to
full time study. But on August 23, 2011, 11 months after maintenance
chemotherapy was completed, his blood analysis showed a relapse of this deadly
disease. That was a "gift" he got for his 20th birthday.
Oleg is now at a hospital. He is undergoing 4th cycle of anti-relapse chemotherapy,
while becoming weaker every day. Doctors recommended bone marrow transplantation,
but a search for a donor at the International Registry is a challenge. It
costs 15,000 euros plus 2,500 euros for transplant delivery. We are both public
sector workers and our salaries are too low to raise such an amount.
Please help us save our son's life! His life journey is only beginning.
Update as of January 8, 2012.
Oleg's friends and relatives were able to raise the full amount of
money to pay the bill from the registry. The money was transferred
just before the New Year and the donor search was started.
Now Oleg needs to raise money for delivery of transplant.
He is undergoing intensive chemotherapy according to anti-relapse
protocol locally, in Samara.
