Hello,
Our son Nikita has always been a lively and happy child. He loved sports and
was very active. Always… until the New Year of 2010.
In January he started complaining of headaches, and we went to the hospital
as a result. After tests, it turned out that he has a brain tumor. The news
almost drove us crazy.
On February 17th Nikita had urgent and very complex surgery that included
trepanation of his skull and tumor removal, which was already pressing on the
vitally important brain canals. The tumor turned out to be malignant: "classic"
medulloblastoma.
After this news it seemed that our lives were suspended in time: it was cancer!
Now our son's life and health depend on how quickly he will be able to start expensive
and costly treatment – chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
After waiting in vain for federal quota, we had to ask caring people and great
professionals from Municipal hospital No.31 in St. Petersburg take us in for
treatment on a commercial basis.
We are unable to pay for our son's full course of treatment, because both of us,
Nikita's parents, work for government and we have two children to feed. We
are hoping for help from kind people. Thank you!
With hope and respect,
Vasiliev family

Nikita's parents applied for assistance to Russian Help Fund. They are
hoping that the fund will be able to pay for chemotherapy for Nikita. A
course of radiation therapy (46,200 rubles) was paid for by Nikita's
supporters.
Update as of April 30, 2010.
Nikita completed a course of radiation therapy and was allowed to stay at
a rented apartment for a month. Afterwards, he will have tests, which
will be followed by chemotherapy (8 cycles are expected).
Russian help Fund agreed to pay for chemotherapy for Nikita.
Update as of June 22, 2010.
Nikita's parents applied to Happy World fund for funds for autologous
bone marrow transplantation at Univeristy Clinic in Wurzburg.
Please do not make donations to our bank account for Nikita's treatment
in Germany, because our fund does not have an agreement with the
clinic in Wurzburg.
Update as of October 25, 2010.
Thanks to help from Happy World fund, Nikita traveled for treatment to Germany.
His stem cells were harvested and the first autologous transplantation took place on October 22.
The news about
Nikita is published at his page on Happy World fund's website.
Update as of April 1, 2011.
Nikita underwent 2nd cycle of maintenance therapy. He feels a bit worse, but we try to
recover: eat well and go for walks. Thanks to AdVita fund, Nikita twice a week studies math
and Russian with a volunteer teacher. He really likes the lessons. On April 9th he will start the
3rd cycle of chemotherapy. Please help us with paying for apartment rent. Thank you very much!

Update as of March 15, 2011.
The second autologous transplantation took place as planned, and
on the 4th of February Nikita returned to St. Petersburg for further
treatment. Nikita is currently undergoing the second chemotherapy
course with Temodal at the City Hospital #31, six courses need to be
administered. Remission in the main illness has been achieved. Nikita
is fatigued and has lost his appetite due to chemotherapy, but on the
whole he is feeling alright. The family needs help with paying the
rent until the end of the treatment, as Nikita is an out-patient in the day
care unit. The treatment itself has been financed by the
Russian Fund of Help.

Update as of June 7, 2011.
At the end of this week, Nikita will start therapy with Temodal.
He feels well, but tries to stay inside, as he does not
tolerate sun and heat.
Update as of June 25, 2011.
Nikita is done with the fifth chemotherapy course; the drugs dose
has been increased. Nikita was very weak and his mucous membrane
acted up again. By now he has more or less recovered. He is eating
but not gaining weight so far.
After the sixth chemotherapy course the doctors plan to let us
go home so that we can continue the treatment course at the local
children's hematology unit.
Thank you all for your help and understanding!

Update as of July 27, 2011.
The doctors from the hospital No.31 allowed us to go home and Nikita
will now be treated locally, at the closest to us Pediatric Hematology
unit in Nizhnevartovsk. The plan is for Nikita to have six more cycles
of chemotherapy, but it will depend on how he tolerates treatment.
On July 15th we returned home, and since then Nikita gained a
kilogram - that's how good it is to be at home.
He met his classmates, and they were happy to see him. He now has a cold,
and on August 4th we will go to Nizhnevartovsk for another chemotherapy
cycle. Thank you for your help!

Update as of October 12, 2011.
Dear friends! We are doing fine. Nine chemotherapy courses are over,
three more are left. Home schooling began in September. The boy is
doing his best to get only good and excellent marks. Once the treatment
course is over we plan to consult the doctors in St. Petersburg.

Update as of November 7, 2011.
Hello! We are doing well. Nikita finished 10 cycles of chemotherapy and has
two more to go. He feels well, but his blood pressure is a little high.
He finished the first quarter with good grades and we are working on having
Nikita takes tests for the 6th class in advance so that he could start in
the 7th grade in the next half-year. It is already real winter here and it
got as cold as -22C. There is lots of snow. Nikita and I take short walks
so as not to freeze.
Recently we watched a movie filmed in St. Petersburg and realized that we
miss the city. In January, after the holidays, we plan to bring Nikita
in for an evaluation and do an MRI. We still need to discuss the date of
the visit with the doctors.

Update as of January 18, 2012.
Nikita has had a follow-up examination at City Hospital 31, everything
is fine.
Update as of February 1, 2012.
Nikita underwent tests. All is well, except for slight cardiac dysfunction.
Chemotherapy was extended for another 6 months, at the same doses.
Last week Nikita finished 13th cycle of chemotherapy. The blood tests are
normal, but he did not feel well, possibly because of severe weather,
low temperatures (below -30C) and being unable to go outside for a walk.
Other than that we are doing OK. Nikita started 7th grade classes. He
successfully passed 6th grade exams in December. We plan to return to
St. Petersburg for evaluation in July, after completing all chemotherapy
cycles.

Update as of February 29, 2012.
Nikita has turned 14 this month and is going to get his national passport.
Nikita has had his 14th chemotherapy course, with all accompanying
complications. But as of today he is feeling fine. The follow-up
examination in St. Petersburg (City Hospital 31) is scheduled for July.

Update as of April 11, 2012.
Nikita is starting his 16th chemotherapy cycle on April 15. After this
one, only two will remain. Nikita feels well, and his blood counts are
rather good. His platelet counts sometimes drop after the chemo, but
this is only due to the procedure.
Nikita's spirits have improved
since spring arrived, and he's planning to venture out on his bike
someday. He's a bit tired from studying, but he's bracing himself
for the final exams for the 7th grade. Nikita is going to attend
evaluation and consultation at City Hospital 31 in the middle of July.
