Hello!
My name is Natalia Zelenevskaya. I am 24 years old. In June 2009
I graduated with honors from St. Petersburg University of Engineering and
Economics and became a postgraduate student. I got married and gave birth to a
wonderful daughter. Her name is Margarita, and she is 21 months old now. Life
was beautiful, and there was no reason to expect any trouble.
But this summer, when I lived in the countryside with Margarita, I felt
somewhat unwell. Sometimes I felt chills, and sometimes I was sweating.
I thought this was due to the hot weather. Once I felt some lump on my
neck but didn't pay much attention even then: it is easy to forget about
yourself when you have to take care of a toddler. But this lump didn't
disappear; on the contrary, it became larger. I returned to the city for
a medical examination. At first the physicians suspected mumps, then
tuberculosis. But the actual diagnosis was much worse: cancer of the
lymphatic system. Hodgkin's lymphoma, stage IV.
I am now undergoing a chemotherapy cycle at the Raisa Gorbacheva
Institute of Pediatric Hematology and Transplantology, and my
daughter is with my parents. At times I feel very unwell, and
my immunity is low thanks to the chemo, so my own child may be
dangerous for me because of threat of infections.
I miss Margarita terribly. She is in that wonderful age when children
change every day, when they starting talking about everything. And I
see and hear none of this. Besides, I am also worried about my mother.
She is 62, her health is far from perfect, and taking care of a small
child is difficult for her.
After the first chemotherapy cycle I will have to undergo a serious
examination: whole-body PET-CT scan. It will enable the physicians
to evaluate the effect of current therapy and to determine the strategy
of further treatment. This examination costs 25,000 rubles. We will
also need to buy various kinds of medications for supportive therapy;
each of them separately doesn't cost too much, but the total amount
is too high for our family to afford.
I cannot work at this time, and only my husband has a job. My parents
get retirement benefits, which are not high in Russia, and so they can
provide only moral rather than financial support. Please help our family
if you can. Thank you very much in advance!
Update as of January 29, 2012.
Natasha is undergoing the 5th cycle of chemotherapy.
Based on CT results as of January 13th her tumor lesions
had shrunk. One more chemotherapy cycle is planned, to be
followed by evaluation and discussion of further treatment.
Natasha wrote to our fund: "During this week I went to
see my daughter. We plan for her to start daycare in September.
I really want to return to normal life, go back to work, find my
calling, realize my dreams while balancing studies, work and family.
Respectfully, Natalia."
