Hello,
Last year a terrible thing happened. Our youngest son Misha was diagnosed
with Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia.
He was just 10 months at the time. Before he got sick,
Misha was a strong and chubby baby and we never thought something like
this could happen to him. Even now he is still strong, happy and active. Only
his blood counts do not look good.
Mishenka is 22 months old. He needs bone marrow transplantation, which
means we need to pay for the search and delivery of transplant. We cannot
afford it, because only Misha's dad is working and he does not have a high
salary. I am on a maternity leave. We also have a 7-year-old daughter.
We all love Mishenka very much and hope that he will get well. We are very
hopeful for your help.
Update as of April 26, 2011.
Surgery to remove a tumor went as planned. Misha is now in intensive care unit.
As soon as he recovers, he will be transferred to R. Gorbacheva Pediatric
Hematology & Transplantology Institute for examination and haploidentical
transplantation. Histology results are not yet ready.
Update as of May 25, 2011.
Misha recovered after surgery. It is assumed that Misha had optic nerve glioma,
but histology results are still not ready. At the same time, search for a
donor is underway while Misha is recovering and histology is being prepared.
As soon as nature of the tumor is clarified, Misha will be hospitalized at
R. Gorbacheva Pediatric Hematology & Transplantology Institute for
transplantation, either from unrelated donor, if it is found, or from
his mom, if time will be running out. In regards to his primary diagnosis,
chronic juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia, Misha's blast percentage
is within 10% based on puncture results.
Update as of June 2, 2011.
Histology results confirmed that the tumor is benign and is not a
progression of leukemia. His blood counts have not went down.
So for now, decision regarding haploidentical transplantation
is being postponed. Misha will be monitored by hematologists
and while he is stable, a search for 100% matching donor will
continue. If his condition starts to deteriorate, haploidentical
transplantation from his mom will again be considered.
Misha feels well.
Update as of October 28, 2011.
Misha was diagnosed with a relapse. Chemotherapy followed by
haploidentical transplantation from his mom are planned.
A matching donor was never found.
Update as of December 18, 2011.
Misha is still being examined since the doctors are not sure that the newly
found neoformation is malignant and is a relapse. Also there is no final
decision as to what is best for the boy, drug therapy or radiation.
Blood counts are normal, Misha is feeling fine. He is having consultations
with various doctors. Clinical summary
Update as of February 22, 2012.
Misha was confirmed to have brain glioma, which is a risk for
neurofibromatosis type I. It was decided against radiation therapy
and for haploidentical transplantation.
Hospitalization is planned for the next week.
Update as of February 29, 2012.
Misha has been admitted to the Raisa Gorbacheva Institute of Children's
Hematology and Transplantology for a haploidentical transplantation
from his mother. Transplantation has been scheduled for March 13.
Update as of April 10, 2012.
The transplantation took place on schedule. However, Misha's blood
counts soon dropped again, and control puncture revealed 16% of blasts
in his bone marrow. The test on the percentage of donor bone marrow
is still not ready, and further therapy is being discussed. Misha
feels well. He walks in the hallway and plays with other children.
Update as of April 17, 2012.
Unfortunately, donor's bone marrow did not engraft. Based on control
puncture, Misha has blasts in bone marrow. He is scheduled for head MRI
for May 2nd to track the lesion in his brain.
After the tests, most likely, repeat haploidentical transplantation
will be offered. This time, from Misha's dad.
