Larisa died on December 16, 2011

Hello!
My name is Larisa Mashevskaya, I live in St. Petersburg. I am 39. I am very ill (with myelofibrosis complicated by hepatosplenomegaly) since 1999.
The doctors were keeping the disease under control with light chemotherapy. In June 2010 I had a relapse, and since September 2010 I have to spend two weeks a month at the hematology clinic of the Federal State Institution Research Institute of Hematology and Transfusiology of the Russian Federal Medical and Biological Agency.
The doctors of the Raisa Gorbacheva Institute of Children's Hematology and Transplantology say that my only chance to recover is a donor bone marrow transplantation. They are ready to administer the necessary treatment right now, but first the donor has to be found. The donor search in the international registry and transplant delivery to St. Petersburg cost 17,500 euros. This is a huge sum for my family.
My husband is the only wage earner. He has to support myself and our teenage son.
As of today I have already been administered 6 chemotherapy courses meant to suspend the development of the disease. With each new course it was harder and harder for me to overcome the complications. This cannot last forever.
We tried to find sponsors who could help us solve this problem, but unfortunately apart from the charity funds that help children (which is definitely the right and the most important thing to do) we could not find any.
I am writing to you hoping kind-hearted people can donate some money for the donor search and transplant delivery. Please help me use all my chances to survive and bring up my son. I so want to see him a grown-up man, a loving husband and father. We are just to able to cope with this problem on our own.

Respectfully, Larisa

Medical conclusion

Update as of April 10, 2011. Larisa is continuing chemotherapy cycles with 2-3 week interval. Treatment will be continued until a matching donor is found. Larisa feels relatively well, but her blood counts are low - she has thromobocytopenia, hypochromic anemia and leutocytosis. Larisa were unable to work since April 2009. Her friends and relatives raised money for the first installment for the bone marrow donor registry (5,000 euros were transferred at the end of February).
A donor search was just initiated, but the family's resources are exhausted. Larisa needs 10,000 euros more to pay for harvesting of transplant and 2,500 euros for its delivery.

Update as of July 27, 2011. Due to closure of Hematology & Transfusiology Institute for summer, Larisa was transferred to R. Gorbacheva Pediatric Hematology & Transplantation Institute where she is monitored as an outpatient. She feels relatively well, but has a hard time tolerating heat. A donor is not found yet.

Update as of August 22, 2011. A fully matched donor was not found. The best donor offered matches Larisa at 90%. It was decided to proceed with transplantation as it can no longer be postponed. It is preliminarily scheduled for end of September - early October. Larisa is still being monitored at day hospital at R. Gorbacheva Pediatric Hematology & Transplantation Institute. She feels rather well.

Update as of September 2, 2011. Larisa's transplantation is scheduled for October 7. She still owes registry for donor activation.

Update as of October 31, 2011. Larisa fully recovered after transplantation and was discharged home. Soon she will have a thorough evaluation.

Update as of November 10, 2011. Unfortunately, according to the results of control tests, transplant from a donor did not engraft, and Larisa recovered with her own cells. In a week, she is planned to undergo a second bone marrow transplantation from the donor.

Update as of December 12, 2011. Larisa is showing increasing symptoms of multiple organ failure and veno-occlusive hepatic disease. She is now on a ventilator in a critical condition.
