We are the parents of Katya Emelyanenko. Our daughter is 9 years old and she has a dangerous blood disease - inherited aplastic Diamond-Blackfan anemia. This rare disease is characterized by low red blood cell (erythrocyte) counts, or there can be none at all, while these cells supply the body with oxygen. Ever since the girl was born she constantly needs blood transfusions, once every 4-6 weeks. Blood transfusion result in elevated iron counts and problems with all internal organs, the heart in the first place. Every new blood transfusion makes things worse. Katya needs to take Exjade regularly, 750 mg per day - this drug corrects iron counts. A month's course costs over 50,000 roubles. The city administration of Stavropol helps us buy this drug, but unfortunately their support is irregular.
Since 2010 the basic disease is complicated by type I diabetes (insulin dependent). Katya is an active girl. She goes to school and wants to be like all other kids. But as she grows that becomes more and more difficult. Last year she got into the intensive care unit with sugar coma, and after that she stopped doing dancing and singing, which is a pity as she just loved her classes.
Katya was diagnosed when she was 10 months old, and since then the hospital has been second home to her. In all these years we have tried all possible treatment methods. Only one more is left: a bone marrow transplantation. In 2009 Katya's younger brother was born, but unfortunately he cannot be her donor. That means that only a non-relative bone marrow transplantation can save our girl. The donor search in the International Registry costs 15,000 euros, plus we will need another 2,500 euros to have the transplant delivered to St. Petersburg from abroad. The total sum we have to raise is 17,500 euros, and we only have 3 to 4 months for that. 5,000 euros have to be transferred to the registry as soon as possible - that will initiate the donor search.
There is no way that can be financed from the state budget, all those expenses are for the parents to cover on their own. We are unable to raise such a huge sum.

Update as of February 8, 2012. A donor was not found yet, but a search is under way. It is very cold in Stavropol and Katya caught a cold. She did not go to school for a few days, but is getting better now. About once a month, Katyusha gets hospitalized for tests and blood transfusions.
