Kolya died on December 27, 2011
Hello!
I am the mother of Nikolai Burov. My son is 19. It is very hard to ask for help
to a grown-up child, but some circumstances are stronger than us.
Nikolai has always been a communicative and kind boy, he played sports and
was on the school's soccer team. He loves animals, and we have a dog at home.
But he got into trouble. In 2005 my son got sick. For 6 months the doctors in
the city of Orel could not arrive at a diagnosis. Only in 2006 in Moscow he was
finally examined and diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. It was like a bombshell,
our whole world was turned upside down, but we were told that the disease could
be cured. From 2006 till December 2009 Nikolai has been treated in Moscow at the
Blokhin Research Institute of Children's Oncology and Hematology. It is impossible
to describe how much he had suffered during that time: 8 BIOCOPP courses, high
dose chemotherapy, surgery, bone marrow autotransplantation. Despite the disease
he entered the Orel State Technical University in 2007, where he is now a sophomore.
Since January 2010 Nikolai has been getting treatment at the Raisa Gorbacheva
Children's Hematology and Transplantology Institute in St. Petersburg. Nikolai
has no compatible donors in the International registry. Unfortunately Nikolai's
brother cannot be his donor either. The doctors are now planning a haploidentical
bone marrow transplantation (bone marrow transplantation from parents who are a
partial match). This surgery is very hard on the body, and the rehabilitation
period is going to be very lengthy. All this time Nikolai will need expensive
drugs (antibiotics, immunoglobulins) and examinations (e.g. PET - around 15,000
roubles) as well as a scan of all bones.
Everything our family used to have has long been spent on Nikolai's treatment.
We will be grateful for any hep we can get. Please help me save my son! Thank you
all so much!
Vera Vasilievna, Nikolai's mother
Update as of March 26, 2010.
Based on preliminary donor search, Kolya does not have matching donors
at the registry. Based on the test results, he does not have bone marrow
involvement, so autologous bone marrow transplantation is planned for him.
Update as of April 30, 2010.
On April 22, Kolya received bone marrow transplant.
He is now in cytopenia and has fever.
Update as of July 14, 2010.
Kolya recovered after autologous bone marrow transplant.
He achieved stabilization. However, his condition is complicated by
a serious herpes infection. Kolya was referred for treatment at his
place of residence, Orel. In the next few days Kolya will return
to St. Petersburg for radiation therapy.
Update as of October 6, 2010.
Kolya is at home. He receives maintenance therapy with Vinblastine.
It was decided that radiation therapy will not be necessary.
Update as of August 16, 2011.
Kolya has disease progression.
It was decided to start therapy with thalidomide.
Update as of October 3, 2011.
We are sincerely grateful to Grant Life fund for paying the
bill and Envelope for God online community for raising
funds for Kolya's tickets and living expenses. He is
already in Wurzburg's clinic where he started
participating in a clinical trial.
Update as of October 19, 2011.
Unfortunaly the examination showed that based on a number of
clinical tests Kolya doesn't meet the criteria for participating
in the clinical trials in Wurzburg.
But Professor Torr suggested the SGN35 (Brentuximab) therapy
which yielded very good results during the clinical trials,
and now it is only available for a pay.
Kolya is now administered Afinitor - a drug that inhibits
tumor cells growth. Brentuximab has been ordered and will
be here in the next 10 days. The clinic will recalculate
the expenses and issue a new invoice.
One course of SGN35 treatment is estimated at 8,000 euros.
We can pay for each course separately, all in all there will
have to be at least 8 courses.
Also, Kolya needs help in paying for the rented apartment -
that's 45 euros per day. There are no cheaper options at
the moment, although Kolya's mother is really trying her best.
Kolya's condition is stable but he's still very weak.
Update as of October 26, 2011.
Unfortunately, Kolya's condition deteriorated rapidly.
He is in cytopenia and has high fever. Kolya has swelling as well.
The doctors found herpes infection, but disease is progressing as well.
Kolya was urgently hospitalized in ICU. He was prescribed albumin,
anti-virals and antibiotcs, and receives blood transfusions.
He is in a critical condition.
Update as of November 29, 2011.
After return from Germany Kolya was hospitalized at First hospice in Moscow.
