Hello!
Kirill Belyaev was born on January 18, 2003. He is diagnosed with
embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.
On January 18, 2008 the local physician diagnosed Kirill with acute
respiratory viral infection. On January 21, 2008 Kirill's nose became
congested and he had a small nosebleed. On January 24, 2008 he visited an
otolaryngologist and had a blood and urine test. The next day, the
otolaryngologist referred Kirill for hospitalization at Children's hospital
No.5. However, based on the results of an x-ray and a visual examination by
another specialist he was refused hospitalization, even though our boy could
only breathe with his mouth by then. Until February 2, 2008 Kirill was
monitored by an otolaryngologist from the pediatric clinic.
On February 3, 2008 he had a severe nosebleed. The ambulance took him to
Ear, Nose and Throat department of Children's hospital No.5. On February 7,
2008 Kirill had CT scan of sinuses and had a preliminary diagnosis of
angiofibroma. On February 14, 2008 at Polenov Research Institute Professor
A. Kholin performed MRI scan, during which he discovered a tumor sized
35*23*32 mm. Kirill's preliminary diagnosis was again angiofibroma.
On February 18, 2008 he was transferred to Otolaryngology Research Institute
where his doctor was M. Samotekin. On February 21, 2008 another doctor, N.
Naumenko, performed a biopsy of the tumor and the material was sent for
histological testing to Professor V. Kovalenko, head of Pathology and
Anatomy department at Military Medical Academy.
On February 22, 2008 based on the histological testing results, Kirill was
diagnosed with juvenile angiofibroma in active growth phase. On February 27,
2008 the tumor material was sent for additional histological testing to
Diagnostics center at Berezovaya Alley 3/5, where on February 29th Kirill
was issued another diagnosis based on the test results:
esthesioneuroblastoma. On March 2, 2008 he was taken to neurosurgery unit of
Children's hospital No. 5. Practically right away, Kirill's condition
worsened and he was transferred to intensive care, where he was applied
tamponade without anesthesia, as his nosebleeds still continued.
The head of the Ear, Nose & Throat unit, Elena Nailovna, refused to let
Kirill have additional testing. On March 4, 2008 the tumor tissue was sent
for testing to Pathology & Anatomy department of Children's hospital No.1.
The next day, Kirill was transferred to city hospital No. 31, to Pediatric
Oncology & Hematology unit.
His doctor is now E. Chavpetsova. As of March 11, 2008, Kirill's final
diagnosis is embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. During admission to the hospital,
Kirill had another CT scan that showed his tumor had doubled in size. He had
also lost his vision and could no longer walk. After he completed the first
course of polychemotherapy under CWS-2002 protocol, Kirill recovered some
vision in one of his eyes, started walking and regained ability to breathe
through the nose.
We have to pay for all the testing and therapies. But most importantly, we
are looking for a neurosurgeon and a hospital where Kirill could be
operated. This is why we are asking not only for the financial support,
although it is very important, but also for help with finding a doctor and a
clinic. Kirill's mom is always by his side, while Kirill's older sister
Masha who is 6 is living with her grandmother.

Kirill recovered after the first chemotherapy and completed the second block.
He feels well. Unfortunately, his eye is still closed. Kirill spends a lot of
time at the game room.
Update as of April 10, 2008.
On Thursday Kirill was installed a port, which was followed by increase in his
temperature. He received antibiotics and Berlition. Due to his tumor, Kirill
cannot breathe through one of his nostrils and can barely open his eye. The boy
started having problems with walking. He was prescribed vitamin B and massage.
Next week Kirill will start the third chemotherapy block, which will be followed
by MRI and CT scan.
Update as of April 22, 2008.
Kirill underwent the third chemotherapy. His eyelid opened and he can see a little
with that eye! Kirill can already walk well and continues receiving leg massage.
His spleen and liver are enlarged significantly. He was scheduled for an ultrasound
test. Today Kirill's tooth started aching and the dentist found five inflamed areas.
Update as of May 15, 2008.
Kirill completed the 4th chemotherapy block. He is in a satisfactory condition.
The CT and MRI scans showed tumor shrinkage in sphenoid and maxillary sinus, but
progression into the medial wall of the left orbit with invasion into the optic
nerve and tumor growth over the carotid artery. Additional tests, consultations
and possible change of chemotherapy protocol are being considered. The results of
ophthalmologist's examination of Kirill's vision are: 0.01 vision in his left
eye and 1.0 in his right eye.
Update as of June 6, 2008.
Due to slow response of the tumor to the base therapy, Kirill started second-line
therapy with Hycamtin.
Update as of July 15, 2008.
Kirill underwent a course of treatment with Hycamtin and was referred for radiation.
He has no appetite and suffers from depression.
Update as of August 21, 2008.
Kirill's radiation therapy is over. He developed a serious sinusitis and his
mucous tissues are enflamed. The eye specialist discovered that Kirill also has
atrophy of the optical nerve in his left eye. In two weeks, Kirill will
undergo control MRI scan.
Update as of September 20, 2008.
Kirill is in cytopenia and thrombocytopenia. He constantly has high temperature
and fatigue. The doctors are giving him antibiotics intravenously. The x-ray of
the sinuses showed that the ethmoid bone contours appear enlarged. The MRI was
scheduled for September 25th.
Kirill's mom would like to thank Anna and
Svetlana, who paid for the consultation with the ophthalmologist, medications
and MRI. Kirill may also need CT scan in the near future.
Update as of September 26, 2008.
Due to slow growing blood counts, Kirill's chemotherapy was delayed for 9 days.
Update as of November 26, 2008.
Kirill is in cytopenia. He has a fever and does not feel well. Due
to his low thrombocyte count, MRI scan has been postponed indefinitely.
Kirill received a transfusion of thrombocyte mass and will also receive
a blood transfusion.
Update as of December 3, 2008.
Kirill is in a stable condition. He is undergoing
therapy with antibiotics. His temperature normalized and we hope to go for MRI scan
in the next few days.
Kirill's mom
Update as of December 16, 2008.
Kirill is undergoing an addition chemotherapy block with Avastin and
Cisplatin. He tolerates it OK, but does not eat well and feels irritable,
according to his mom.
Update as of December 24, 2008.
After the 10th chemotherapy course his condition is stable. There are some
complications on the part of his vegetative-vascular and endocrine systems.
Every move makes the child sweat profusely, his body temperature is low and
he has no appetite. Upon the psychologist's advice he is taking Strattera
regularly, and there are some improvements. Very soon Kirill is to have
examinations to find out his condition after the chemotherapy.
Kirill's mother
Update as of December 31, 2008.
Kirill underwent 11th chemotherapy round with Avastin from
December 30th to January 1. The treatment started with Kirill suffering
from increasing nosebleed, but having good test results.
As of December 31, he had severe nosebleed and cannot breathe
through the nose. Kirill cried the whole night non-stop.
He feels well during the day, however.
Kirill's mom
Update as of February 12, 2009
Kirill is receiving supporting chemotherapy course with
Endoxan and Vinblastine. He feels relatively well.
Update as of March 6, 2009
After 11 chemotherapy blocks Kirill was transferred on supporting
chemotherapy on February 6th. The plan is to move him back on active
chemotherapy in May after a checkup. While on supporting chemotherapy,
Kirill was admitted to the unit with a fever (40.5C) and was diagnosed
with viral pneumonia. The treatment was successful and the boy is being
prepared for the discharge, but his next chemotherapy block will be
postponed until he is in a stable condition. Kirill was examined by
doctor Kovalevskaya, an ophthalmologist, and based on her recommendation
was tested at two ophthalmology centers. They issued two diametrically
different conclusions from physiological testing of Kirill's vision. Now
we need to consult with neuropathologist to determine whether treatment
of left optical nerve atrophy is necessary.

Update as of April 3, 2009
Kirill's condition is stable and he is continuing supporting chemotherapy.
We made a joint decision to continue the course for another month, and
then undergo MRI and PET + CT scans. Kirill gets tired easily, he limps,
and his legs feel weak. In addition, he does not eat well and feels
unstable psychologically. Kirill went to a consultation with a neurologist
and was prescribed therapy to treat optical nerve atrophy as follows:
Actovegin, Vitamin E and multivitamins. Every month he will come
for a visit and therapy correction. Unfortunately, eletric stimulation
of optical nerve was contra-indicated for Kirill.
Kirill's mom
Update as of May 2, 2009.
Kirill Belyaev is undergoing dental treatment. The treatment is expensive,
and his mother urgently needs financial support.
Update as of May 13, 2009.
Kirill finally completed MRI scan at City hospital No.31. The results
are encouraging. The tumor had finally, after 15 months of treatment,
stopped accumulating contrast, which allows Kirill continue supporting
therapy according to the protocol. After three courses of supporting
therapy, he is planned to undergo MRI and PET and CT scans. In parallel,
Kirill is visiting a neurologist monthly, because he had developed
polyneuropathy, which manifests itself in periodic severe limping,
decreased attention, excitability and headaches.
Kirill's course of treatment is under ongoing correction.
Recently, he had a course of Milgamma. The therapy with Strattera
has been constant, however. Due to long-term chemotherapy, Kirill had
severe toothache, and the examination discovered the need for extensive
dental treatment.
At first, Kirill had treatment for five instances of inflammation, and
then orthodontist treatment. Kirlll also had EP study at two ophthalmology
centers and he is monitored by the ophthalmologist due to atrophy of
his left optic nerve. The combined opinion of neuropathologist and
ophthalmologist is encouraging, but the process will take
a very long time.
Kirill is a very patient and generally happy boy, but due to chemotherapy
effects he has serious problems with memory and attention. He gets very
upset that he forgets everything.
The cost of his monthly treatment fluctuates depending on the number
of tests and consultations and ranges from 15,000 - 22,000 rubles.
Please help us financially! Here are the estimated expenses that
are coming up:
1. Strattera - 4.5 packages at 1,320 rubles, or 5,820 rubles.
2. Consultations with ophthalmologist and neuropathologist - 2,050 rubles.
3. Current medications - 3,000 rubles.
4. EP study: 2,500 - 4,900 rubles.
5. Dental treatment: 5 teeth at 3,000 rubles, or 15,000 rubles in two months.
We would like to thank Vika for paying for two months' supply of
medications for Kirill!

Update as of August 8, 2009.
Kirill felt worse and had problems breathing through the nose. The
doctors suspected relapse. Fortunately, CT scan results showed that
the contrast agent does not accumulate. Kirill is continuing his
treatment under the protocol. PET imaging was decided to postpone for
now.
Update as of October 2, 2009.
Kirill is continuing supporting chemotherapy with Vinblastine and Endoxan
as an outpatient. He stays at the hospital only for Vinblastine injections.
He feels relatively well and will undergo four more such courses. At the
end of October, Kirill will need to go for control PET imaging that costs
18,000 rubles.
Update as of November 30, 2009.
Kirill completed a course of chemotherapy. He now needs to undergo PET
scan to evaluate treatment results. Kirill is currently hospitalized at
Children's hospital No.1 with a viral infection.
Update as of December 3, 2009.
PET and MRI scans were rescheduled several times. Kirill is on treatment
at 6th ward of Children's hospital No.1. He had drastic temperature

due to lowered immunity.
Update as of May 19, 2010.
Based on PET imaging, Kirill had no changes.
Update as of October 4, 2010.
Based on MRI data, Kirill's condition is the same. On Monday he
will be hospitalized at Municipal hospital No.31 due to rhinitis.
He will receive antibiotics, and also needs to have his port taken out.
Kirill feels rather well. He enrolled into Arts School,
Choreography department. Kirill goes to kindergarten and is getting
ready for the 1st grade.
Update as of March 13, 2011.
The tests showed that the tumor is necrotic, but it has grown in size compared to
the last year. Doppler test showed disruption of vein flow and neurologist prescribed
complex therapy. In the second half of March, the doctors of hospital No. 31 will discuss
Kirill's further treatment.
Update as of March 30, 2012.
