Center of Hematology in Medical University of Saint Petersburg coordinates efforts to raise
the funds to pay for bone marrow transplant of 24 year-old Ira Kovalenko, suffering of
chronic myelogenous leukemia.
As a result of search in International Bone Marrow Donor Registry, several appropriate donors
were found. Its a good luck, and the problem is to raise funds for medicaments for
transplantation.
Dear sirs, I need your help.
My name is Ira Kovalenko. I'm 24 y.o. I was born in St. Petersburg. I was a healthy child but
had some troubles with thyroid gland. I went in for sport a lot: swimming, volleyball, track
and field athletics. From 1994 I've studied in forestry engineering academy. At the same time
I begun to take a greet interest in photographing
(see my works there).
In 1986 and 1995 the operations of ablation of thyroid gland knots were performed on me.
In 1996 the thyroid gland cancer with a hard stenosis of windpipe was diagnosed. I don't want
to describe - how is to have diagnosis like this in 19 y.o. ... I begun to struggle for my
life and could do it with the help of outstanding physicians in St. Petersburg medical
university, State Center of Pulmonology of Russian medical academy and Medical radiological
institute in Obninsk near Kaluga. I began to live as a healthy person after several years of
treatment, but in July 2000 the chronic myelogenous leukemia was diagnosed. It was like
thunderclap in a sunny day! In 1999 I've completed my academy with honours and begun
post-graduate studies. And I should struggle again... I have a younger brother, but he can't
to be a donor for me. I need unrelated bone marrow transplantation. The physicians in SPbMU
can carry out operation, but it costs about $60 000. I have no such big money. That is why
I ask you to help me, to save my life. Have a mercy.

Updated as of November 11, 2001. New medicine Glivec aimed for
the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia was approved in the Russia. In this connexion
Ira thinking about new treatment. Glivec course costs about $3000 per month during at least
10 months. That is why we don't stop fund raising and call everyone don't forget about Ira
and help her to survive.
