Hello!
My name is Irina Prikhodko. I live in the city of Kandalaksha in Murmansk
region. I am 36. I am severely ill.
In June of 2010 in R.M. Gorbachova Center of Pediatrics Hematology and
Transplantology I was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, M0 variation,
transformation of myelodysplastic syndrome.
As far back as 2 years ago such diagnosis sounded as a death sentence.
At present, hope of cure does exist - this devastating disease responds to
treatment! Bone marrow transplantation can defeat it.
Doctors from R. Gorbacheva Center of Pediatric Hematology and Transplantology
are ready to administer necessary treatment. And I have already received a quota
for this procedure. However, the most important step has not been taken yet - it is
necessary to find an unrelated donor in International Registry of Bone Marrow Donors in
Germany. Donor's bone marrow and transplant delivery to Russia cost 17,500 euros.
Naturally our family has saved and raised money (not much), but we do not have the full
amount and there is nowhere in our little town to raise it. And taking into account how much
is still ahead (treatment before and after transplantation, accommodation in St. Petersburg,
rental costs etc.) our financial situation turns to almost catastrophic.
My husband is the sole earner in our family. Our young children depend on him, too.
As of today to slow down rapid progression of the disease I received 4 cycles of chemotherapy
in Murmansk regional clinical hospital, and only God knows how many are still ahead. Each new
course makes it harder for me to tackle complications. It cannot last forever.
We learned of AdVita fund from the Internet. We tried to find sponsors to solve our problem, but
unfortunately, we failed to find anything, except for charities helping children (what is without
doubt more important and right).
I am writing with a hope to find kind-hearted and responsive people, who will be able to donate
some money for the donor search and delivery of donor's material. Please help us, do not let me
lose my chance to survive and raise my son and daughter. I so want to see my son grown up and
being tender husband and father; and to see my daughter as a bride in a wedding dress and as
a much loved, happy and caring mother.
Update as of January 21, 2011.
Yesterday, I transferred 5,000 euros of our
family's personal savings and our friends' donations to Morsch international
registry to initiate the donor search for Irina.
She is still in the hospital in Murmansk where she completed the 5th cycle
of chemotherapy.

Update as of March 8, 2011.
Irina is again at the hospital in Murmansk. She underwent another
cycle of chemotherapy. She was very unwell, but improved a little since.
The last two cycles, Irina started getting allergy to Cytosar.
We are thankful to everyone who supports us not only financially,
but also emotionally - with their empathy and care. Thank you so much
for your kindness, understanding and compassion! We are very grateful
to the doctors and nurses for their professionalism and attention.
Today, on Women's Day, I am wishing our better halves to stay healthy,
lots of smiles, flowers, joy and happiness, good luck and
strong families!

Update as of April 4, 2011.
We are doing OK. Irina is at home for now. She is scheduled to be
hospitalized on April 11 for another chemotherapy cycle. We received
information from Pediatric Hematology & Transplantology Institute
that donor search is coming to an end and final donor examination
is underway. BMT is preliminarily scheduled for the end of May -
early June.
As of today, I paid only 5,000 euros of the total 15,000 euros.
And we still need to raise 2,500 euros for transplant delivery
to St. Petersburg. We will be very grateful for help.

Update as of May 4, 2011.
Transplantation is scheduled for June 1 (moved due to donor's request).
Irina will be hospitalized at R. Gorbacheva Pediatric Hematology &
Transplantation Institute on May 16th. We will celebrate the upcoming
Victory Day together as a family. On May 12th we will travel to
St. Petersburg. Irina's treating doctor at R. Gorbacheva Pediatric
Hematology & Transplantation Institute told us that we need to arrive
earlier to have time for the required tests.
Happy Victory Day! For us, it is one of the most important holidays.
Our grandfathers fought in the war and were wounded. They told us a
lot of stories about the war. Wishing everyone peace and kindness,
joy and happiness, to stay untouched by the troubles and be lucky
in all your endeavors.

Update as of May 30, 2011.
Irina's transplantation was postponed for indeterminate time, as
her donor is not available due to medical reasons and a search for
a new donor was started. Yesterday we returned home from St. Petersburg.
During her stay in St. Petersburg, Irina was evaluated and her own stem
cells were harvested. These cells will be frozen until Irina undergoes
transplantation and begins recovery. This was done as an insurance
due to an unexpected situation with donor's cells, although we still
hope to receive cells from Germany.
Irina feels OK despite continuing growth of blasts. Our whole family,
friends and relatives are supporting her. We hope that she will be
able to stay in a good condition until transplantation.

Update as of June 7, 2011.
We have news! A second donor is undergoing final tests, and apparently,
sucessfully. Doctors once again preliminarily scheduled Irina for
transplantation - this time, for July 6.
We are very hopeful this time it will happen! Irina is planned to
be hospitalized on June 20th in St. Petersburg. We will
start all over again.
Unfortunately, my attempts to find lacking funds (10,000 euros)
for activation of donor were unsuccessful. Unfortunately, we have no
time to wait any longer.

Update as of July 1, 2011.
We are in St. Pete's. On June 27 Irina was admitted to hospital.
The conditioning process has been initiated. The doctors are preparing
Irina for the transplantation on July 6. We know little about
the donor - only that it's a young woman living in Germany.
We hope that everything is going to be fine. Irina is feeling ok.

Update as of July 8, 2011.
On July 6th Irina had transplantation. Doctors believe it went well.
This is a start.
We are enormously grateful to all the doctors who took part in
preparation and transplantation. Irina is now feeling well. We are
hoping that everything will go well from now and the first
high-risk 100 days will pass without complications.

Update as of July 24, 2011.
Irina has the first signs of donor's transplant engraftment.
She feels rather well.
Update as of August 10, 2011.
Irina recovered after transplantation and was discharged for
outpatient monitoring. She does not feel very well yet due to fatigue.
She will be tested for cytomegaloviral infection.
Update as of September 14, 2011.
Irina is still being monitored at day hospital at R. Gorbacheva Pediatric
Hematology & Transplantation Institute. It has been two months since
transplantation. Overall, she feels rather well, but she developed skin
GVHD and has a high cytomegalovirus titer. Irina takes immunosuppressive
therapy and Valcyte. She is in remission in regards to her primary diagnosis.
Update as of October 3, 2011.
So far Irina is doing fine. She's still in St. Pete's getting outpatient
treatment. The second skin GVH reaction is gradually subsiding. The
doctors are decreasing hormones doses. Irina has some heart problems:
a bad tachycardia.
The doctors said that is a complication after the treatment course and
prescribed potassium therapy. We hope Irina's condition improves soon.
Almost all patients of the clinic have problems with drug shortages.
As for Irina, she needs Tacrolimus.
Today Irina had another CMV test done at the Pasteur Research Institute.
The results are not ready yet. Her mood is normal, she's trying her best
to recover as soon as possible.

Update as of October 31, 2011.
Irina's condition is OK overall. She just got a new, the third already,
acute GVHD reaction. As soon as doctors start lowering the doses of
hormonal therapy, it starts all over again. Her side effects are:
joint pains (it is hard for her to walk), tachycardy, high blood
pressure and some other issues.
But it is not most important, as the doctors are trying to overcome
all that and we are very grateful to them. We are glad that Irina is
in a good mood and ready to fight. She tries to not dwell on the
issues and believes that they are temporary and will go away
and all will be well.
Irina asked me to thank all AdVita fund volunteers who are helping us,
including Natalia Temnikova and Natalia Zeida for their care,
understanding and responsiveness.

Update as of December 8, 2011.
The kids and I are at home, and Irina is still in St. Petersburg.
Irina is OK overall. The doctors are now gradually reducing her hormonal
therapy doses. We hope that it will not elicit another spike of GVHD.
Irina still has pain in her joints and it makes it difficult for her to
walk, and she has tachycardia and high blood pressure.
Recently she got another issue - acute thromboflembitis, and her leg is
swelling. Additional therapy was prescribed and we will try to cope
with that too.
Irina's mood is good. A New Year's Eve is coming up. The holiday rush
is taking over us. Ira is making presents for the kids by herself.
We hope to celebrate the New Year together in St. Petersburg (kids
and I plan to come and see her during the school break).

Update as of February 23, 2012.
Irina is feeling ok. Thrombophlebitis is gone but Irina still has problems
with her joints.
Update as of March 11, 2012.
Irina was diagnosed with aseptic joint necrosis. She is consulted at Vreden
Orthopedics Institute regarding endoprosthesis.
Update as of April 28, 2012.
Tomorrow my daughter and I are leaving to St. Petersburg to see her
mother for the May holidays. Unfortunately our son could not join us;
he is in 11th grade and has to study for the college admission test.
Ira is still in St. Petersburg. She had consultation for her joins
disease in Vreden institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology and was
diagnosed with aseptic necrosis of hip joints. Doctors say that this
is a side effect of immunosuppressive therapy and extended
hormonal treatment.
Unfortunately the only possible treatment in this situation would be
a replacement of both hip joints with prosthetic implants. The doctors
recommended us to have the next consultation in August to decide on when
to schedule the surgery and which hip joint to replace first.
Of course Irina was very much upset to hear about the hip replacement after
all the procedures she has already been through. She is quite herself again
now, and we are all mentally prepared for the surgery.
Currently Irina is on the maintenance therapy, and is taking Zometa and
Miacalcin in order to preserve other joints.
The treatment for the main decease shows positive dynamics - the doctors
are gradually reducing the Tacrolimus dosage. We very hope that the reduce
will have no side effects.
