Hello,
My name is Larisa Shumskaya. I am a wife of Gennady Makeev, a patient at
Hematology Unit of Alexandrovskaya hospital #17. At the end of April 2010,
my husband was diagnosed with acute B-lymphoblastic leukemia. He started
cycles of chemotherapy and treatment with expensive medications. Unfortunately,
chemotherapy alone will not cure Gennady. He needs bone marrow transplantation – this
is his only chance to live. The donor search is done at the international
registry, because there is not one in Russia. The donor search costs 15,000 euros,
and delivery of transplant to St. Petersburg costs additional 2,500 euros. We
do not have this much money. Gennady and I have three sons. He is a caring
father and loving husband. In October 2009 Gennady lost his job.
I am a teacher and my salary is modest. I am currently the only breadwinner
in the family. We would very much appreciate financial support to continue
Gennady's treatment. We are hoping for your help.
Respectfully,
Makeev family

Update as of September 10, 2010.
Unfortunately, Gennady's sister did not match as a donor.
He also does not have potential donors at the International registry.
Haploidentical transplantation from his sister is under discussion.
Update as of May 29, 2011.
Gennady is continuing the maintenance therapy. He is not feeling
well as he is recovering after the latest chemotherapy cycle.
Once the blood counts are back to normal, he will have to take
Sprycel on a regular basis again.
Update as of October 31, 2011.
Gennady receives maintenance chemotherapy and Sprycel.
He feels rather well, but only has medications for a month of intake.
He cannot receive any more under free medication program, and his
letters to Health Ministry went unanswered.
He may need charitable help.
