Another Danya's photo

Danechka was 6 months old when the doctors diagnosed him with brain tumor. For several years they could not get more exact diagnosis because the tumor was located in a hard-to-reach place and Ukrainian doctors did not dare to do biopsy. For several years the little boy and his mom were moved from one hospital to another... So many worries and tears... The tumor was growing, while Danya's quality of life was getting worse. At present he suffers from severe epileptic attacks every day. Danya has almost lost his eyesight, he cannot walk and does not speak.
In June 2010, thanks to money raised through donations, Danechka went to Berlin's HELIOS clinic in Germany for examination and biopsy. At last he was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma, grade I. The tumor is growing slowly but mercilessly, depriving the boy of a chance to live a normal life, if not of a life itself…
In February 2011 Danya's condition worsened. Epileptic attacks became more frequent. It emerged that the tumor started to grow, and the treatment had to be initiated urgently, or he could lose his life.
With the help of AdVita fund my boy underwent a consultation in the 31st hospital of St. Petersburg. Council of physicians made a decision to perform partial tumor removal followed by chemotherapy. Since Danya is a citizen of Ukraine, his treatment has to be paid for out of pocket. For surgery (which will be carried out at Leningradskaya Regional Children Clinical Hospital) the clinic billed his family 127,469 rubles. After the operation, chemotherapy for at least six months will be needed. Chemotherapy protocol will be discussed upon the surgery results, so the cost of treatment is not known yet, but it is expected to amount to hundreds of thousands of rubles.
We are asking everybody who can help to support this family!

Clinical summary (Helios clinic)
Medical conclusion (Helios clinic)

Update as of April 30, 2011. This week, Danya had MRI. The results were disappointing. The tumor has grown significantly and invaded brain stem. The doctors consider any further therapy (surgery or chemotherapy) unlikely to be effective. Alena and Danya will soon return home.

Update as of June 2, 2011. Danya feels rather well, although his hemoglobin count is low and he has to go for blood tests regularly. He is now at home and his mom takes him out in the evenings (as it is very hot during the day) and tries to feed him fruits and vegetables, although Danik prefers sweets, cookies and ice cream. Danya still suffers from epileptic seizures, but in general his condition is unchanged.

Update as of September 10, 2011. Danya's condition is unchanged. MRI study in July showed that tumor is no longer growing. We are now trying to find a stroller for Danya, because he outgrew old one, and it is not easy to find one for his weight.
