Hello!
We live in Omsk. Our son Dima is four years old. At 15 months he
started to get sick often and soon afterwards developed a limp in
his right leg. After we had blood tests done, Dima was diagnosed
with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He underwent treatment at the
hematology department of our local hospital for a long time, and
several chemotherapy cycles were administered. Fortunately, Dima
achieved remission, and the worst was over, it seemed. Alas, it
wasn't...
In January 2011 Dimochka started having strong headaches. Bone
marrow puncture revealed a bone marrow relapse and CNS leukemia.
We were terrified by these diagnoses. Moreover, the doctors told
us that bone marrow transplantation is absolutely necessary,
therefore we came to St. Petersburg to be treated at R. Gorbacheva
Institute of Pediatric Hematology and Transplantology.
In August 2011 our younger son Sasha was born. We fervently hoped
that his stem cells may be transplanted to Dima, but Sasha
unfortunately did not match Dima as a donor.
On October 28 Dima underwent related bone marrow transplantation
from his dad with only 50% compatibility. This was a high risk
transplantation, but we literally had no other options. Currently,
the donor bone marrow is engrafting. Recovering from the
transplantation always takes time, and Dima is going to need
several expensive medications. At the moment he was prescribed
Octagam to stimulate his weakened immune system. The treatment
costs 22,000 rubles a week and lasts three months, therefore the
entire course of treatment amounts to 264,000 rubles.
Unfortunately, we cannot afford to pay for such expensive treatment
in full. Dima's dad is a lineman, and I cannot go to work at
the moment, as one of our children is an in-patient at the
hospital, and the other is a newborn.
Please help us raise the money for Dima's treatment. We will
be very grateful to all our supporters.
May you and your children always be in excellent health!
Update as of February 08, 2012.
Based on planned tests, Dima has activation of hepatitis C. It
has caused reduced transplant function. Therapy with Roferon A
was started after consultations with infectious disease doctors.
However, the hospital currently does not have this medication in stock.
Update as of March 17, 2012.
Based on doctors' council decision, Dima was prescribed Pegintron, an
injection a week for six months. Dima has already had four injections.
His blood counts are normal based on test results, and he is in complete
remission in regards to primary diagnosis.
Next week he will have a complete evaluation, and he may be allowed to go
home for follow-up by local hematologists in Omsk. He is now taking Heptral,
Ursofalk and Pegintron and feels well.
Update as of April 11, 2012.
Dima's transplant was rejected; however, he is in remission in regards
to primary diagnosis. The doctors at R. Gorbacheva Institute of Pediatric
Hematology and Transplantology have discharged Dima home. He is going to be
monitored by a hematologist locally, and in three months complete examination
in St. Petersburg is scheduled. At home Dima is going to continue treatment
with the antifungal drug Vfend, as well as Pegintron to recover the liver
function.
