My name is Marina Zakharcheva and I am asking for help for my husband Andrei.
Our family was shattered when my husband was diagnosed with B-cell chronic
lymphocytic leukemia.
It all started from complaints of general fatigue, shortness of breath and
getting tired quickly. The doctors thought the problem was in Andrei's lungs.
In early November 2010 Andrei had a medical exam an as a result was hospitalized
at Hematology Scientific Center of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow.
Unfortunately, chemotherapy (4 courses under CAMPRED protocol) and treatment with
other expensive medication appeared to be ineffective. Six months later it became
obvious that the only way to save Andrei was unrelated donor bone marrow
transplantation. Raisa Gorbacheva Center of Pediatric Hematology and Transplantology
in St. Petersburg is ready to take Andrei in for transplantation, but we have to find
a donor from the International Register first. The search will cost 15,000 euros and
transplant delivery – 2,500 euros. This amount is out of reach for our family and we
cannot raise that much ourselves, while the time is working against us.

The first installment of 5,000 euros was paid by our family,
so donor search was initiated.

Update as of July 31, 2011.
Andrei is monitored as an outpatient and feels rather well.
Once every three months he has therapy with Campath. He was also
found to have a high CMV titer. Andrei receives Valcyte.
Update as of October 31, 2011.
Andrei's lymph nodes enlarged, and therapy with Campath was stopped.
Hospitalization and further treatment are being discussed.
Update as of April 20, 2012.
Andrei is being treated for bilateral pneumonia. A partially matching donor
has been found, and the bone marrow transplantation has been scheduled for June 2.
