Hello,
Arisha Yakimova is a cute and cheerful girl, the joy of her family.
She is a very strong and clever little girl who has endured too many
troubles in her short life.
Arisha has a serious genetic disease - progressive spinal atrophy type I,
or Werdnig-Hoffman disease (progres-sive muscles weakness).
When Arisha was one year old, she got sick with pneumonia. She failed to
recover on her own and had to be con-nected to an artificial lung
ventilation (ALV) device. Unfortunately she never went back to normal
breathing again and since then she can't breathe herself. That's why
she has been living in an intensive care unit in a children's regional
hospital in Yaroslavl for the last 3 months.
To take Arisha home we need the AVL device for home usage.
Also we need additional expensive medical equipment to take care of Arisha at home.
We don't have the money for it.
Being alone all day, Arisha misses her relatives very much. She is
incredibly happy when I come, she plays, smiles, laughs, learns to
pronounce sounds and words.
When I have to leave Arisha she gets sad. Even her favorite toys don't
make her happy. Time stops for her, she is not used to being alone.
Before she got into hospital Arisha used to spend all the time with
me and her other relatives, she was making us happy with her charming smile.
Every day, every hour, every minute we were together, enjoying life.
We were happy that we had each other.
Too much has happened during the first year of Arisha's life. It was
difficult, terrible, painful but we were together to fight with it,
getting hold of every small bit of hope.
But now we spend our days miles away from each other. My little girl
is waiting for me, and I go to see her every day, spending 5 hours
per day on the road.
Arisha has a sister who loves and misses her very much. She hasn't
seen Arisha for 3 months now.
Every day when I come home my older daughter asks me: "How is our Arisha?"
Very often people ask me: "Why do you go to the hospital every day?
You could only do it once in a while". But try to imagine what it is
like to spend the whole day in bed not being able to get up. I think even
for any grown-up this day would seem like a year, and for a child it is
juts unbearable. And I for my part cannot survive this day without her
either. I go there because I love her, I go there to tell her I love her,
to let her know I haven't forgotten or be-trayed her, so that she knows
that and it gives her strength to continue struggling. I know that she
is very strong and she'll win. Every day I come and ask her to hold on
for a few more days, tell her that I will take her home soon.
A new drug for treating this illness (which has been incurable until
recently) is now being tested in the USA. This drug has passed tests on
animals and showed excellent results, but it takes time before I can
be used adminis-tered to people.
To be able to live until that time Arisha needs continuous care, and
no one but myself can give it to her.
Your respectfully,
Galina Yakimova, Arisha's mom

our happiness and worries! Thank you Advita fund for stretching your
arms to help us! Thank you Pomogi Rebenku.Ru fund for helping us raise

We are very grateful to all the people who have responded and helped
us solve our problem in just 3 days!
Very soon my little girl who touched so many hearts will join me!
The equipment should arrive next week and we will be hospitalized together.
We will learn and try to deal with out problems. We know that it
will not be easy, but the most important thing is that we will be
together, and I am sure that we will do well!
The most important thing is that Arisha will not be alone anymore!
And when we come back home we will yell "Hurray, we are at home!"
Thank you everyone! All the best! Hurray!

Update as of January 2, 2012.
We are doing well. We have been at home together for four months already,
and it is a real happiness. Arisha gained some weight and loves listening
to the books that her sister reads to her. All is well.
We are waiting for the medication in the clinical trials in the US to
be successfully approved so that Arisha can finally get well.
