Hello!
Our little girl Alla has been sick since April 2007. Her diagnosis is acute
lymphoblastic leukemia. She received treatment at Hematology unit of
Krasnodar Regional Children's Clinical hospital. Our girl felt well and we
hoped for her complete recovery, but in November she got to the unit in a
serious condition due to recurrence of her disease.
The first chemotherapy cycle showed that her body responds to treatment
worse than expected. We can now only hope that bone marrow transplantation
produces a positive result.
The cost of the donor search at the international registry and delivery of
transplant to St. Petersburg is 17,500 euros. I have a modest salary and a
big family and I will not be able to cover all our expenses without your
help. I also have no other chances to save my child. Our family is hoping
for your help.
Update as of February 27, 2009.
We are sincerely grateful to our supporter who paid the bill for the
donor search. The search was initiated. We now need to raise 2,500 euros
for the delivery of transplant.
Update as of April 14, 2009.
Alla came to St. Petersburg and is now going through examinations before
the transplantation scheduled for May 6. Her parents managed to raise
2,000 euros on their own to pay for the transplant delivery; 500 euros
still have to be raised. They also need help with apartment rental
payment.
Update as of June 17, 2009.
Transplantation took place on schedule. Alla had already recovered
and was transferred to outpatient monitoring. Her family needs
financial support, as they are in a very difficult situation.
Update as of July 15, 2009.
Alla is under the doctors' watch as an outpatient. Her family has
several children and they are in a very difficult financial situation.
Update as of August 8, 2009.
During the time Alla has been staying in St. Petersburg, she wrote many
poems and drew many pictures. A few of her poems, with Alla's permission,
we are publishing on her page:
I'd like to be as tall as a giraffe
I'd like to be as heavy as an elephant
I want my illness leave as if in a drift
From under a bulky wardrobe.
Home!
Mountains are blue.
Streams are so fast.
Only we'll meet
After time will pass.
It will be joy at home
Once I get back.
Everyone will be so happy
When I get well.
And my friends will wait for me
And will help to bring me back.
The time to eat and time to sleep
My whole life fits in a page.
My mom keeps writing day and night.
When will we go home at last?
Change
Grass changes: it grows
Blossom changes: it flowers
Weather changes: daily and nightly.
How can I help change myself?
Transplantation
In veins, like in pipes,
Life is being pumped.
Allochka, please change!
A dog is watching me, so puzzled:
Why do you hide your nose in a muzzle?
St. Pete. So much water!
Rivers, bridges and canals.
It rains and the wind is howling.
It's going home time.
Update as of August 23, 2009.
Alla's donor chimerism is decreasing and she has blasts again.
Alla needs urgent donor's lymphocyte infusion
(see bill for lymphocyte collection),
which means we need to raise 2,500 euros for the delivery of lymphocytes
as soon as possible. The infusion is scheduled for September 2nd.
Update as of October 2, 2009.
The infusion of donor's lymphocytes for Alla was postponed due to infectious
complications and high liver counts. Alla has now completed a course of
treatment and is planning to go for tests that should help determine further
treatment. Alla is dreaming of going home, even for a short time, and the
doctors are discussing this option.
Update as of October 13, 2009.
Alla was allowed to stay at home until November 8th. She feels rather well.
Update as of November 13, 2009.
Alla and her mom came to St. Petersburg for testing.
Update as of December 9, 2009.
Alla is completing planned tests. Everything is well. The doctors
found it possible to let her go home for three months. The next round
of tests will be in March of next year.
Update as of March 3, 2010.
Alla and her mom will come for the scheduled tests on March 13.
Update as of March 26, 2010.
Alla underwent planned tests at Pediatric Hematology Institute. All is
well. Although she has some digestive problems, she does not have GVHD.
Alla returned home.
Update as of July 3, 2010.
Alla came to St. Petersburg for planned tests.
Update as of July 8, 2010.
On June 25th we came to St. Petersburg for
planned tests. Alla had a puncture and we are waiting for its results.
In May she got sick and felt unwell for almost a month. She is now better.
In May, when she was feeling down, Alla wrote this poem:
Tears rolled down my cheek,
Like peas of raindrops,
I tried so hard to win,
But lost by an inch.
Just by an inch
I could not stretch and could not reach,
But someday I will get a prize,
Even if I am tired.
Alla studies at home and receives only good grades.
She transferred to 6th grade. She writes to her friends and even
found new pen pals. Alla likes Caruto game and she became
more active and sociable.
Alla's mom
Update as of July 20, 2010.
After the consultation with Prof. Zander from Hamburg, Alla was
prescribed a course of therapy with MabThera. Doses are being verified.
Update as of October 4, 2010.
Alla underwent a cycle of MabThera, with no response.
After several consultations, it was suggested that the neoplasm
in her mediastinum may by thymus, as these changes are possible
during hormonal growth. For now, the doctors will monitor the
situation and biopsy will be done only in case of tumor growth.
We are allowed to go home for a month, and the future depends on
CT results. Alla feels rather well, but once a month she has strange
attacks: nausea and lowered blood pressure.
For now, it is not clear what is causing them.
