Hello everybody! Please help us!
My name is Olga, I am from St. Petersburg. My son Andrei Kazakov is 25. In November 2004 he had a complicated operation at the Military Medical Academy and his brain tumor was removed. Thanks to neurosurgeon D. Svistov, anesthesiologist Y. Baranenko and Andrei's therapist A. Savchuk, the operation was successful. Thank you very much!
However, during the histological testing of the tumor, differences of opinion arose concerning Andrei's diagnosis. The doctors of the MMA recommended Andrei to consult a radiologist at the radiation therapy unit on 2nd Berezovaya Alley. From December 22, 2004 until February 11, 2005 Andrei received radiation therapy. We would like to thank S. Cherizov for his help!
During the same time, my son had final exams at the university and then had to write thesis. He refused to take sick leave and in February 2005 he defended hid thesis at St. Petersburg's Electric Technical University. It took so much of his effort!
After an MRI scan on November 14, 2005 we felt enormous relief. The tumor did not grow again. It was such a joy! Andrei refused to apply for disability again and even found a job. "I am healthy", he was telling everyone.
Unfortunately, we were hit with more bad news on April 22, 2007 during a scheduled CT scan, which showed new formations. On advice of Andrei's doctors, he had an MRI scan of three spinal cord regions. We were terrified to learn that Andrei had tumor of the same characteristics in lumbosacral region of his spine.
The diagnosis was set as medulloblastoma of cerebellum with metastases in bone marrow. We started treatment again. Andrei completed radiation therapy on July 19th. Then things took a turn for worse. Andrei's doctors recommend continuing therapy with Temodal. Unfortunately, it is not available for free in the city pharmacies, although we are eligible to receive it. I was able to only get 1 package of this drug (5 pills) in 0.25 g dosage, while Andrei was prescribed 4-6 packages.
The cost of a course of treatment is 75,000 rubles!
Please help! Save my son! God bless you!
As a mother, I knocked on all doors. I went several times to Health committee, Municipal counsel, and the committee for Urgent Social Support. So far I got no results.
Unfortunately, the time is working against us. I plead you to help! I would like to thank everyone who responds to my request!

Update as of October 22, 2007. Andrei is undergoing the third course of therapy with Temodal, out of total six courses scheduled. He tolerates the therapy well. He was able to obtain the first course for free, and received financial help to buy the second course. AdVita fund paid for the third course using the funds raised for treatment of all patients.

Update as of October 30, 2007. Andrei's mom was able to get Temodal for two more courses for free. As of now, Andrei needs Temodal for one more course.

Update as of November 20, 2007. Based on the results of CT scan, Andrei Kazakov is in complete remission. The therapy with Temodal will continue according to protocol to strengthen the result. Andrei has three more courses left, and he has enough medications for the two of them.

Update as of February 16, 2008. Andrei completed therapy with Temodal. The CT scan did not show any areas accumulating contrast agent, however, he has small cysts at the area that received radiation. Andrei feels well. The next control CT scan will be in six months.

Update as of October 14, 2008. Hello! We are enormously grateful to everyone for their support and helping us believe in ourselves.
On September 12th Andrei had MRI scan.
The conclusion: "There was no sign of the tumor or its metastases. The changes in the bone structure of the vertebrae may be due to bone marrow reaction to chemotherapy and radiation".
We did it! We are wishing lots of health, confidence and trust in your ability to everyone.
We are particularly grateful to AdVita fund for the invaluable help they provided. We will always remember you!

Update as of October 27, 2009. Andrei completed a series of control tests. There was no areas accumulating contrast. Andrei feels well.

Update as of April 3, 2010. Unfortunately, Andrei was diagnosed with a relapse. He was hospitalized at City hospital No.31 for anti-relapse chemotherapy.

Update as of April 16, 2010. Andrei completed the first cycle of anti-relapse chemotherapy and is now recovering. After the second cycle he will undergo control tests.

Update as of May 24, 2010. On May 11th Andrei completed the second cycle of chemotherapy. He is now in cytopenia. Based on MRI results as of May 21, the tumor is stable. PET imaging was scheduled for May 31, and its cost is being verified.

Update as of June 2, 2010. Andrei underwent PET imaging. The conclusion: condition after combined therapy of medulloblastoma in left hemisphere of cerebellum and 4th ventricle. No PET-signs of metabolic activity of tumor tissue. However, I was told that PET does not show lesions smaller than 1 cm. And Andrei had a lesion sized 4x3x3 mm after chemotherapy.
Today he will start another cycle of chemotherapy. We really need the following medications:

- Carboplatin, 400 mg - 3 pc.
- Etoposide, 300 mg - 3 pc.

Foreign-made drugs are preferred, generics are not allowed. The medications are needed by June 20th. I will be very grateful for your help.

Update as of July 6, 2010. Andrei underwent second cycle of chemotherapy. He tolerated it worse than the first one. He is now in cytopenia and is recovering. Afterwards he will have to have MRI and further therapy will be discussed. Unfortunately, unit where Andrei is on treatment will be closed in August, so he will need to find a hospital that will take him in.

Update as of July 20, 2010. Based on MRI scan, there are no lesions accumulating contrast. However, two more cycles are planned to strengthen the result.

Update as of September 2, 2010. On September 2nd Andrei completed chemotherapy and he will undergo MRI on September 22. He feels rather well but has low blood counts. Andrei is receiving therapy with Grasalva.

Update as of September 29, 2010. The CT after the 7th course of chemotherapy confirmed the remission, there is no contrast accumulation. Andrei is now undergoing supporting therapy with VePesid, the main course of treatment is over. Andrei is feeling well.

Update as of December 28, 2010. Hello! Yesterday, Andrei had the last examination - spine MRI. No lesions were seen in his head or spine, and remission was confirmed. So we feel relieved in anticipation of the New Year! Our congratulations to all the doctors, AdVita fund volunteers and staff, donors and supporters! Wishing you good health, prosperity and success! Thank you very much for your help and support.

Update as of March 22, 2011. Based on planned tests (MRI), remission was confirmed: there is no contrast uptake and no new lesions. Andrei feels well.
