Hello!
I am Alexei Cherniy's mother and I am asking for your help. Please help me
save my child!
I'd like to tell you a little bit about my son. We live in Omsk. Alexei is
17. Until the fall of 2008, Alexei was growing up fine and was absolutely
healthy. He is a very active, lively, and open kid. He has many hobbies and
loads of plans for the future. He is studying at high school (11th grade,
the last year before university) and is going to enter Omsk State University.
He wants to be a lawyer. Alexei likes sports – he used to swim for a long
time and his latest hobby is snowboarding (it has been kind of cool among
the boys to snowboard). He goes to gym and leads healthy lifestyle. Alesha
has many friends. He is a very kind and soft-hearted son, friend and brother.
He will never hesitate to help when somebody needs it and he loves his little
sister Nastya very much. She is 2 years old and madly in love with her brother.
Just before the New Year, we started to notice that Alexei looks tired and
pale all the time. He was complaining about lack of sleep, so we went to see
the doctor. The tests showed he had low hemoglobin. The doctor wrote a prescription
for a medicine that would bring Alexei's hemoglobin up and told us to come back
in 7 days. The second checkup showed that Alexei's hemoglobin dropped even lower.
He had an extended blood test and it showed some blast sells. We were told to
see a hematologist urgently.
The next day Alexei was hospitalized. It was a shock for us that a seemingly healthy
boy was suspected to have such a serious, difficult to treat illness, consequences
of which we were afraid to even think about. We truly hoped that it was a mistake
and that everything will be fine but further analyses, which were done in a
hospital during December 2008 just proved our fears. Alexei's diagnosis was
myelodisplastic syndrome (refractory anemia with excess blasts RAEB-1).
Our doctors in Omsk recommended us to go through a course of treatment in
St. Petersburg. In February 2009, Alexei had tests in St. Petersburg and
the results showed that his illness is progressing and transforming into
acute leukemia (M6 version). It is a very scary diagnosis…
Please help me to save my child. I know that it sounds pretentious and
sacramental but how else should you ask for help? For each parent, the
moment their baby is born brings such happiness that is hard to describe
in words. First smile, first word, and first steps… You are watching your
child is grow, teaching him different things, helping him to understand the
world, explaining him what is good and what is bad, what is dark and what
is light. Your child is growing and you think what an amazing person he
will be, how much he will achieve in his life, but suddenly all that is
ruined by terrible news. Bone marrow transplantation is vital for Alexei.
Thirty-five possible unrelated donors were found in German international
donor registry. We need to pay for the search for matching donor of stem
cells. It costs 15,000 Euros, and we also need money to live in S. Petersburg
and to buy medicine. It is very big amount of money for us. Please help us
if you can. I am begging you to help me save my child!
Update as of May 12, 2009.
Alesha completed a course of chemotherapy and entered remission. He was
allowed to go home to await the results of the search for the bone
marrow donor.
Update as of May 25, 2009.
A donor for Alexei was found! His parents and other relatives raised
5,000 Euros, but the rest of the money (10,000 Euros for the collection
of transplant and 2,500 Euros for the delivery) has to be raised as soon
as possible, because Alexei's remission is not stable.
We are announcing an urgent round of fundraising!
Update as of May 29, 2009.
The transplantation was scheduled for July 9-10th. We have a month to
raise the money.
Update as of July 15, 2009.
On July 10th Alesha underwent transplantation as it was impossible to
wait any longer. However, he still owes registry for the donor search.
Alesha feels well.
Update as of September 8, 2009.
Alesha successfully recovered after transplantation, and the doctors
allowed him to go home to Omsk for a month.
However, Alesha still owes donor registry for bone marrow transplant.
Update as of October 15, 2009.
Alesha and his mom came to St. Petersburg for control tests.
Update as of October 22, 2009.
The latest tests confirmed remission. Alyosha has no signs of GVHD.
He feels and looks well. The tests, however, revealed aspergillosis
infection, so Alesha has been prescribed a 400 mg/day dose of Vfend
for the next three months. Alyosha had already left for home in Omsk,
but scheduled to come back to St. Petersburg for testing in a month.
Update as of January 15, 2010.
On January 19th we will come to the clinic for another round of tests.
Alesha feels well and was taken off Vfend therapy for now.
Alesha's mom
Update as of January 25, 2010.
Alesha and his father came to the clinic for control tests.
Update as of February 4, 2010.
Alesha underwent testing and he is doing well. Based on puncture
results, donor's bone marrow engrafted fully. He previously had
heightened transaminase, but after he was prescribed liver protecting
medications, the counts normalized. Alexei is currently taking only Biseptol.
Update as of October 22, 2010.
Alesha is in remission, but he has liver complications. He is being examined and treated locally.
The doctors in Omsk are consulting with the specialists from R. Gorbacheva Institute. Alesha
plans to go to the US to study. He feels well.
Update as of December 24, 2010.
Lesha feels well. The complete testing in R.M. Gorbacheva Institute of
Pediatric Hematology and Transplantation is planned for January.
